Blizzard Entertainment has announced today that they will be hosting a series of charity auctions which will feature server-blade hardware that they originally used in the early days of their hit MMORPG World of Warcraft. People from around the world will have an opportunity to own one of the original HP BladeSystem server-blades that housed the many realms from across North America and Europe.
The proceeds of the auction will benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, which is one of the top centers for treatment and research of pediatric cancer and other calamitous childhood diseases. Approximately 2,000 of the original World of Warcraft server blades, from about 500 different realms, will be auctioned. Each server blade wil be contained in a custom windowed case with the World of Warcraft logo on it, and will give a view of the hardware inside. The server blades will also come with a plaque which is signed by the World of Warcraft team.
The series of auctions will begin on October 17, 2011, and will take place over the course of 4 weeks. Auctions will be taking place on eBay, and will be managed by Kompolt. The auction schedule as well as a detailed FAQ are available at http://www.ebay.com/blizzard/.
