Sony Online Entertainment's wildly popular MMORPG Everquest has just been inducted into the Game Developers Choice Online Awards Hall of Fame. Everquest is the second game to receive this honor, joining Ultima Online. Everquest's induction can be attributed to its longstanding contributions to the advancement of online gaming.
Everquest has received credit for the introduction of the concept of guilds and raids, and has been cited as a major inspiration for many MMOs that followed. Sony Online Entertainment's work with Everquest has been recognized by many in the gaming and entertainment industries, and the game has received such honors as the Walk of Game selection in 2006, and a 2008 Technology and Engineering Emmy.
Everquest has covered over 16,000 virtual miles of territory, has over 12 million player-characters, over 380,000 non-player characters, over 100,000 unique items have been discovered, and almost 3,000 items which have yet to be discovered.
In addition to Everquest's induction, DC Universe Online has been nominated for Best Online Visual Arts, and Best Online Technology; and Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures has been nominated for Best Audio for an Online Game, in the GDC Awards for 2011.
Everquest has an 18th expansion coming out later this year, titled Veil of Alaris. We'll keep you posted on new information as we receive it.
