Still one of the top MMORPGs out there. This could be considered the "Alternative WOW" to many. And just for the record, this is a pseudo-3d game (example of 2d - MapleStory). <_<;
The best 2D traditional (non-casual) mmo in my book. Set the standards for lots of MMOs and still is pumping out a lot of content even after nearly a decade of being out. They have both pay to play and free to play servers both of which are still very active to this day. The PvP is so-so but the GvG is much better than many MMOs out there. I still find myself logging on to this game every few months even though I first started my character back in say... 2001 in alpha :o One nice thing to note is they haven't deleted my characters even after leaving my account inactive for over a year.
i think Ragnarok Online (RO) is one of the oldest MMOs around that people still play and talk about. I'm really glad that after the announcement of RO2 they're still pushing content out. I guess those who really can't stand 2D MMOs should avoid RO, but everyone else should definitely give it a try.
Ragnarok seems to be one of the ones that set the standards for a lot of the MMOs that came after it (in other words, a lot of people will refer to some MMOs as "being like RO" or as a "RO Clone"). the PvP and War of Emperium (GvG) are fun, but I wouldn't really call them balanced, since they're dominated by specific builds (essentially, you pretty much have to choose if you're going to do PvP, PvE or GvG, as the builds can be very different and good for one thing and not the others). I think this was probably the first MMO for a lot of us.
