The Bases



First of all, learn the basic shapes~
Try to make it look 3D
Looking at them as they are here looks like they're completely useless, here's a example of how useful they are~

See? now it's just add the body shape and other details. By combining the shapes you can make a whole body, it works for ANYTHING, animals, people, objects, whatever~



The Head


Here's two ways to draw a head, use any of them.

First way~


First draw a circle, then a cone beneath it, to make it look like an egg~
Then divide your egg in four parts, like the image, it'll help you drawing the nose, mouth and eyes on the right place.


Divide the horizontal lines like that, it'll help you even more by determinating the eyes' position, and the mouth's position,too. To help you even more, divide the vertical line like that, then drawing the base for the eye will give you the exact location for the mouth~


Fill the egg with other eggs~ Just like that, then make a line on each eye's inner corner, then just draw the mouth and the nose. These lines just helped you with the mouth and nose sizes, +rep them~


The top of the ears are just in the end of the eyes' line, and their bottom is right on the nose's line. See that small blue line right between the top of your egg and the eyes' line? It'll help you with the hair, but the line can be higher if you want, closer to the top of your egg. Look at these eyes, their style is called "cat eye", there's tons of other styles out there. Pay attention on the eyebrows, their shape makes the eyes look more natural on the face.


Here's the result~ It's not an egg anymore. There are tons of other hair and eye styles out there, you can look at some manga or anime to see what you like and use them.


Second way~


The egg again~ Not much to say here, same thing as the first way.


Now it changes, draw an egg ou your egg and the refference lines, they'll, again, help you with the mouth, nose, eyes and ears~


More lines for refference, divide the nose's vertical line in 3 parts, just like that, and draw that line to give yourself the exact location of the mouth.


The eyes' size will depend on the beauty, but have you seen Dorothy? Her eyes are so big that I get afraid to click on her, she creeps me out
Anyways, on serious mangas and animes the eyes are smaller, and on cute or comedy mangas and animes the eyes are bigger. The eye between the eyes is only to show the distance between the eyes, and, by the way, the distance between the eyes and the face borders is "half an eye".


Now go pratice it all~



Angled Views


Ok now it gets more difficult, as it involves a bit of perspective.
Two side views, first side view, then 3/4 view~



Side View



The egg again~ But now it's a broken egg, dividing the circle will help you with the cone-thing.


More lines, these will help you with the eyes(horizontal) and ear(vertical).


Even more lines... The image is self-explanatory, so I won't say much here.


Two more lines, don't worry, there's only one line left on this section. These, as the image shows, will help you with the eyes and eyebrows, and the eye's inner corner should be in the same line as the mouth's corner.


Draw that line with that angle, this line is the hair line, use it to draw the hair in the right place.



3/4 View


A broken ehh again~ As on the side view, dividing the ball here will help you drawing the cone-thing.


It looks like a mask, reminds me of a vaizard girl from Bleach~ Anyways, as always, the vertical line helps drawing the eyes on the right place, and the vertical line is a refference for the nose. The vertical line on the left will help you drawing the ear.


More lines, but they're all helpful. The line on the forehead is a refference to draw the hair on the right place, the vertical line beneath it is for the eyebrows, the other vertical line that touches the bottom of the ear is for the nose, and the line beneath the nose's line is the mouth's line. Obvious description of the image.


Here the perspective comes in, annoying thing. If you draw some more lines they'll help you with the proportion, that is, the perspective, only because you have drawn them~ Again, the inner corner of the eyes is in the same line of the mouth's corners.

The Eyes



Draw a circle, this time it won't be an egg.


Now the eyelinds. Imagine a long rubber strip over a white snooker ball. The eyelind involves the curvature of the eye.


A relaxed eye's eyelind covers part of the pupil and the iris. As there's a lot of eye styles, you can just copy one that you like~ But going on with this eye...


The eyelashes add weight to the eye and their size depends on the character, and, on this case, it's for a adult, female and sexy character... Nobody would want to see a guy or a little girl with sexy female eyes, it would be weird.


More details, if you have seen those hiragana, katakana and kanji made with a brush, then good, or whatever. These lines are based on the japanese writing, that is, it should be done in an order and pattern.
1- begin with not much pressure and, as you go to the left, or righ, depending on the eye, put more pressure.
2- now it's opposite, begin with a strong stroke and as you go down, put less pressure.
3- same thing as 2~
4- same thing as 1~
The reflexes add more life to the eye and to the character. Everyone have seen an unconscious or hipnotized anime or manga character, their eyes don't have reflexes. You can add more depending on the character's mood, like when it's happy, or sad like But give the reflexes the right shape~



The Mouth



The mouth has a "bow" format. Understand it's shape, the upper lip is like seagulls, and the lower lip is like bow and arrow. And of course, the mouth can open and close, and if the mouth is open, of course the lips will look thinner.


Now, your turn to draw the mouth. Here's a almost complete mouth, the only thing left are the teeth. But we'll go further, it depends on you, on your style, if you want a detailed mouth or not.


Now give se "seagull format" to the upper lip, try to see he mouth like 3D~ If you want, draw some lines on the centers to help you on the next step.


Add more details, shadows, and of course, teeth~


If you use this mouth style, here's a character example~ You can see that the mouth is in the lines of the eyes' inner corners, you can make bigger mouths, but try don't to make it too big, specially on women.

The Hands


The hands are every artist's nightmare, they require tons of pratice. It's hard to draw them in the basic forms like other body parts.


First draw a egg-like circle and chose a point, let's call it the "Anchor Point"~ This point will be from where the finger refference lines part from. Draw the lines~ And note that the thumb line is not too close to the other lines, and that the middle finger line is almost 1 egg long after it gets out the hand's egg.


Now it starts getting harder, but first the joints... Draw those points, paying attention on the distances, and you're done with it. The thumb has 3 joints, too, but one of them is "hidden" inside the hand, that's why you can turn it around, unlike other fingers.
Don't forget to do the most important: add life to the hand. It's better that you pratice drawing straigh fingers without all those details, then, as you get better at it, just add the skin markings and other details.


The thumb can turn around it's axis easily and touch the other finger' base joints~
And pay attention to the finger's lenght~ You can use you own hands as refference, it'll be easier to draw the details and check the fingers' lenght~


Now let's make it look 3D~ Everyone's hands are like a shovel, some times we even use it as it were a shovel~
The lines inside the hand base are where your hand bends, and above the blue line are the base joints.


Never draw the hand like it were a plain piece of whatever~ It can bend and curve, following the lines in the palm. And note that the part of the palm where the thumb is follows the thumb's axis~



Pay attention on the palm lines, even when you're drawing the hand from back view, like the image, it'll help you make the hand look more natural when drawing the fingers.


Here are some examples of that you can do only by following this hand guide~ And remember that using your hands as refference makes it a whole lot easier~



The Feet


Like hands, you can use your own feet as a refference, other people's feet~


The foot in base form~ A cylinder for the leg, a deformed ball for the heel and a "half peanut" for the front part.


A side view of the foot~ Pay attention on the heel, it's not straight, it's like a ball.


Shoes~ They cover the basic shapes of the feet. and remember that they're not made out of paper, there's some centimeters of shoe sole between the feet and the ground.
If you think you suck at drawing shoes straightly, you can draw the feet first and then the shoes, makes sense because you have to have feet to wear shoes~


And no one has straight feet, they're curved, and that's why everyone has a shoe for the left foot and another for the right foot, the same model or style for both, unless you want to be different~


Now that you can draw the feet in it's basic forms, try putting some action in it~ And more perspective.

The Hair


Female Hair


Define the hair line, as the in other images. And pay attention, the hair line goes from one ear to the other.
You can draw more lines depending on the hair style, like on this image. Then draw the arrows, they will guide the hair.


Now, life~ Add the final details, collors and some light effects to make it look better~


The hair isn't only for beauty, it can tell the character's movements~ Like when you're running, your hair will move, that is, if you have hair.



Male Hair


As before, define the hair lines. Then, as refference for the hair, the arrows.


As before, again, the details~ Collors, and some light effect, but not much light as on female hair, unless the guy is gay.



Expressions


Angry

Very angry: The eyebrows bow down, the pupils get small. Drawing the teeth, and maybe blood vessels, helps by giving more life to the emotion.

A bit angry: The pupils are normal, but the eyebrows are still bowed. No blood vessels or teeth here.

Angry: The mouth bows like an upside down "U", and the eyebrows keep bowed, but nos as much as before.


Sad

Very sad: The eyes close tight, the mouth opens, eyebrows bow up, like the image. And, of couse, teardrops, draw some on the face and on the eyes~

Sad: Eyebrows up, but the mouth but the mouth isn't open much like before. Draw some teardrops on the eye corners and add more light effect to the eyes, like ~

Distracted: I know that being distracted isn't really a sad emotion, but it's on the guide... I guess it's more like worried... Anyways, eyebrows up, mouth like an upside down "U" and a bit more light effect on the eyes, compared to normal.


Happy

HAAPPY~ The eyes close because of the smile, and add some red lines on the cheeks. And don't forget the mouth~

Happy~ Eyebrows up, a small line follows the upper curve of the eyes, like the character is relaxed, and the lower eyeling covers part of the pupils. And the mouth is a smaller "D" now~

Just happy: Same as before, but the eyes are normal, not even a bit closed. The mouth is just a ")" now~ You can draw a 3 instead of the mouth, like :3


Others

Thinking: One eyebrow bows up and the other bows down. The mouth is lie a "V", upside down. The eyes normally look towards the sky, or to the sides, like trying to remember something or thinking about a lie, using creativity~ Depend on wich side.

Surprised: Eyebrows up~ Eyes open~ Small pupil, and the mouth is like an egg~

Sick or disgusted or nauseated: The details are minimalist, the mouth is a "S", and the eyelinds and eyebrows are straigh lines. You can add a sweat drop to make it look better~

Body Language


This is important~ It's not like TO where you buy a Emo Mask or whatever and your character do everything, and even lay fainted in the ground, using the mask
Body language is pose, like "I want smex" pose, or normal pose, or tired... Anyways~


Neutral: just a dummy stanting there, emotionless~
Brave: here's personality, like those guys posing before entering a cave...
Sexy: looks like and S, hand on hips and all those weird stuff~


Discrete: closed, crossed arms and/or legs, normally the character is turned back to the "camera".
Fight: PVP time? Not yet... Going on... Agressive pose, trying to say "I'm hax"...
In love: that's obvious, all those little girls' stuff like "I want to marry daddy", or those anoying adoring fans


First, the bad guy, small eyes, smaller pupil means more evil. And they have pointy, square faces, too. Akuma from Street Fighter is an example, he's so evil that he doesn't even have a pupil, another example ia Aizen from Bleach, his eyes and pupils are small, and his face isn't rounded.
Second, the hero, or the good guys. Their eyes are bigger and the face is a bit more rounded. There's tons of examples, like Ichigo, or any good guy around there.
The last one is the innocent, the victim, every little girl or whatever with big eyes and rounded face are examples.



Combat Scenes


Now it's PVP time, here's how do draw fights~
It can't be like SNES Street Fighter games where you kick the guy on the legs and he recoils like he had been punched on the face.


The first one is SNES Street Fighter style, the second is how it should be, at least. If you dash and punch someone right on the somach, he or she will recoil and bend like on the second image. Drawing the fist and the arm with blur will give a speed impression~


My favorite part, kicks~
On the first image looks like the other guy is just evading the kick or the guy who's kicking just lifted his leg and the other one is dancing. The second is better, but I'd draw that kick movement in a different way, someone would just fall in the ground after kicking like that, really... Anyways, it's just Newton's theory, for who knows it.


Add details, it'll give a better impact impression, making it look better. Details like lines to give a movement and speed impressions, more lines to give an impact effect, and blur~


Chosing angles. Here, the image is awful, no coments...


Now it looks better, it really looks like a throw, even thought no one in this world could throw someone else at that height. It looks more real, and this angle is useful to show where the other dummy will fall. You can make a cat's soul get in the dummy, too... Then he'll recover in air and fall standing on feet~


Even better angle. You can see, in only one image, that he were thrown, who has thrown him, from where he were thrown and where he fell, that is, what happened, how, and where. You can also add blur, curved lines and other details to add more realism to the action~

Female Anatomy


Front View



1- Just the base for a head, not much to say here as it's all explained up there.
2- Now it's time to clean, get ou those lines you won't use anymore. And add some details~ Female and female-looking characters' upper eyelinds look thick because of the eyelashes. Within time you won't need to draw thousand lines to guide yourself, as you will know ehere to put stuff and you'll be using your imagination, you know they're there, you see them, but they don't are there
3- More cleaning, and details. Know what lines are thick or thin and define them, it'll help you coloring your art later~ The hair is the hardest part in the head. And define a light source to help you know what lines will be thin or thick, and do the shadows. On anime/manga any hair collor is OK, use your imagination~



3/4 View



Draw the bases and the other lines. The eyes' lines will define the direction your character is looking, if it's looking down, draw them a bit lower, if it's looking right, draw them a bit to the right, and so on~
You can use these colored lines as reference~ You'll need to think where's the half way from the ear to the nose to decide where to draw the eyes, after you draw one of them, that yellow triangle will help you with the other one.


The eyes are drawn on the triangle's points, like the image. The light details, ht reflexes, on the eyes, will help by defining the direction your character is looking at, and do them equal in both eyes, or your character will look cockeyed


Now finish it by adding more details, the hair you want and don't forget to get rid of those refference lines~ The eyes and cheeks/chin give "weight" to the character, so their traces gotta be thick and detailed. Keep the mouth and nose traces thin, to keep your character delicate~ The hair can't have thick traces, too, it gotta be light, take care of it. Draw shadows beneath the nose ,the lower lip and the chin to make it look better~



The Body



Your character's bones~ The wholy character is 7 heads tall, the shoulders are 1 and a half head from the top of the head. The torso's size is 2 heads. Anyways, use the image as a refference to each body part's size~


Another refference to proportion~ The legs on manga/anime characters are a bit taller compared to the other half of the body.


The female body can be defined as "casual", "sexy", whatever poses just by moving the shoulders and the hips in different directions~


Now the sketch~ Here we give meat to the body Study the female body () to know how to draw the shoulders, legs and arms. Use circles, eggs and cylinders to get the body right. And try not to use straight lines, use curved lines~ Nothing on human body is completely straight, specially on women~ Then, abuse the curved lines~ You can also take a look on the character M-66 from "Black Magic", by Masamune Shirow, she can be a good refference at this point of your drawing.


Now it's a character, define the muscles and other parts, and erase (but not completely) those balls and cylinders that you used as refference. The eraser is your best friend now~ Clean your drawing and correct any errors on the "building"~ If you're doing it on paper, don't forget to clean it after you erase, the rubber rests can disturb you if you will color it or define it with a pen.


It's done~ Remember, this is just a guide to use as a refference and not rules on how to draw. You can use it just to pratice and when you're good or when you want to, you can draw whatever you want doing anything you want, use your creativity~ Pratice A LOT this development in stages.



Chibi~



Two heads are better than one~ Chibi characters are 2 heads tall. Just draw two eggs and you're done with the head's base and the body's size refference~ The good thing on chibi character is that they don't have all those head and face format details, they're good to pratice heads~


Big head, small body~ As you can see, obviously, there's not much space on the body for all those tons of details, so draw a gracious, a cute pose~ And, as always, build the dummy with the basic forms and the tips for normal bodies. The arms and legs get thinner as they get distant from the torso and end in a round point, like the image.


The hands are small, like cute baby hands~ the forearm is chubby, getting thin and ending on small, delicate fingers~ The arm can't be thin and the fingers can't be fat, that would be a Disney-style character.
The same thing with the feet. Chubby leg getting thin and ending on a small, delicate foot~ No need to draw knees on the legs. Draw a line to separate the leg from the foot, and the feet should look like a ballet dancer's feet~ Also, the feet can't be "Disney-style". The leg should go straight to the foot, so, don't draw a heel or a big foot, like the image.


Now define the main traces, it's time to put some good-looking clother on your character~ The nose is define by a line, you can add some shadow to define it, or do it when coloring, like the last image. The mouth, in this example, is like a "D".


Now erase the refference lines and, if you're using pencil and paper, darken the lines you want to keep. Add more details if you want and get ready to color~


There it is~ Fully colored. And pay attention, here, the nose was defined while coloring, as I said before~

Male Anatomy



The base~ Like the female character, this one is 7 heads tall. Note that you can draw, on the image, a straight line from hte top of the head to the base of the foot. The "meat" is distributed equaly on both sides.


Study the male body... ... To have an idea on where to draw your character~ On males, the shoulders are larger, unlike (most) females who have large butts~ Now we begin to get rid of the unnecessary lines and to add details and other stuff.


Now, more details, as always. And, again, add details, light effects, shadows, define the thick lines and the thin lines, clean your art and get ready to collor it~ Just reminding that this guide is a refference.


The Male Torso



Start off with a bean, and divide it on the vertical, and, as you can see in the image, the horizontal line is a refference to the hips. Imagine that it's a rubber bean~ It can turn around. And look, the horizontal line changed, and don't forget the vertical line, without it your art will be distorted.


Look at the holes, you'll put the other body parts on them~ But don't begin the drawing with a bean, first, draw the bones, then put the bean on them. This is a fast and easy way to draw a male torso~


Pratice, train your bean in different angles~ Be creative~ And remember that the torso, or bean, is 3 heads tall.



3/4 View



As always, the circle, no need to be perfect, just a bit egg-shaped. Draw the line from the top of the head to the chin, the eyes' line is in the half of the top of the head-chin line, more or less. Then add the jaw and the chin. Male faces aren't as round as female faces~ Do a square chin, not too much round.


Define the face's planes and sketch the face. As always... The eyes are an eye distant from each other, the lower part of the nose is on a line between the eyes and the chin, the mouth is 1/3 beneath the nose's line, the ear is vertically between the eyebrows' line and the nose's line... *pant*


Add details to differ your characters from other male characters, and from children and women, these details will define if your character is childish, girlish, or more manlike. Male eyes are, almost always, rectangular, and not so big and shiny as female eyes. Also, the eyelashes are smaller, the nose doesn't look too small or turned up like females. And draw thick eyebrows,
men don't have thin eyebrows, unless they like to. Then just add some shadows, hair (if you want) and the other details to make it look better~



Actions

Now that you know how to draw all these stuff, let's give more life to it... Poses~

Start off by drawing the bases doing the pose you want, draw circles on the joints and on the head. Don't worry about the hands... Yet~
Draw the "Action Line" (blue) before adding "meat" to your character, if you want to.


Keep the bones intact~ Just add some "meat" here and there, using the basic shapes. Don't put too much pressure on the pencil, or it'll be hard to erase and the paper will get all dirt and deformed, that is, if you're drawing on paper.
You can "decompose" other drawings or pictures into base forms, skeletons, then just redraw them the way you want~ It's a VERY good way to pratice proportions and drawing

Note~ The best way to draw characters doing stuff is by refferences, try to copy pictures, other drawings, find inspiration~ You can even draw your friends posing or use magazine pictures, internet pictures. Withing time you'll be able to draw stuff just using your own mind, your own imagination as a refference~



Mechanic Characters



First, the base, as always~ Large shoulders and, unlike humanoid characters (humans ans anthropomorphics), the legs are't close to each other. It can be a tobot imitating a human or just a bulked up robot like the image, it depends on what you want~


Now, the sketch. Here's the difference between drawing mechas and drawing humanoids, no need of "balls" and "cones". The robots are usually bulked up, with electronic stuff behind the big armor and weapons hidden around their body~


Now just get out those lines that aren't useful anymore and add details, like buttons, pannels, and other stuff.


Add more details and finish your art. Mechanic characters look better with strong strokes on the borders and thin strokes on the details. When drawing your mecha, think about it's function, like urban, space, if it has to be fast, or be able to take shots and tank other kind of damage, or even if it has to be strong, your choice~



Clothes and Accessories



Start by drawing the base, don't just go straigh to the clothes, remember, you gotta have a body to wear clothes~ You can add lines to guide yourself while drawing all the stuff on your character, like the image~


Now give it some move, some action~ The clothes don't stick to the body, they're loose, at least in most cases. Draw arrows to guide yourself about the movements of your character, these arrows will be where the clothes get distorted.


Now you can dress your character the way you want~ Do it based on the arrows. Put gravity to work on your art, the clothes have weight. You can look at yourself and dance a bit in front of the mirror to see how your clothes move around as you move~


An important note~ The clothes bend, distort and hand on the opposite direction of the movement, like it's being dragged, puch. After you finish, clean your art and just post it somewhere and brag about yourself to others~


Draw objects and other stuff as they are in the real world, shoestrings aren't fishing threads, and zippers aren't just zig-zaged lines~
