steam is convenient if you already use it. it's nice having one program to launch all of your games from.
if you already have a warpportal account it's gonna yell at you to make a new one, it's buggy and you have to close that window/ignore it and try again until it realizes that you have one (i had a wp account prior to RO2 and the launcher for RO2 via steam tried to get me to make a new one, closed the window and it opened up a log-in next attempt or something). a lot of people use steam for PC gaming and it just creates a wider marketing range for MMO companies (people on steam to play Skyrim/TF2/Indie Games/etc etc). people who might not usually play MMOs might notice it as free in the steam store.
if you're not already a heavy steam user you might not find it entirely convenient, however if you already use it heavily it's probably a convenience.
contrary to what some people seem to believe I noticed when RO2 released, is that STEAM IS JUST A PORTAL TO LAUNCH RO2. you get the same exact game as everyone else and play on the same servers as everyone else. some people alluded to the idea that steam had it's own 'version' which is probably just people who don't even know what steam was/is.
