Not really looking for advice, I just wanted to rant.. feel free to give me your opinion though.
Being a part of Last.fm staff is something I'm really grateful for. The team is absolutely amazing and we've taught each other so much during the past years.
Even though I have some certain global moderator powers, my main assignment is to deal with a certain forum section, called General Discussion. The only problem is that the majority of the regulars (aka spammers) seem to have the idea that it's not General Discussion, but in fact, /b/ and Off Topic.
This pisses me off to no end! We've worked so hard to turn it into what it is today, a lovely place with barely any broken rules and new people never wondering about what exactly the forum is for. The place is pretty great, I just have one huge problem with it.
There are a few regulars (who have nothing else to do but to post in the GD all day). Most of them have over 5k posts because of this. Anyway, the section was never meant to be an off-topic place. It's a General (Music) Discussion forum. We are very strict when it comes to going off-topic, simply so that people will understand and stick with the rules, which they are mostly very good at. <3
So um, since it's not an off-topic section, we have two threads dedicated to off-topic things. One of them is an introduction/chit-chat thread for new and old users, and the other one is pretty much a "Random thread". The only problem I have with Last.fm is that Random thread. I hate it so much. HATE. The regulars have turned it into /b/ and I honestly do not appreciate it. It used to be a place for random pictures (not 4chan related) and music videos ++. But now, all they do is post shitty memes everywhere and things that only they find amusing (because the content sucks). I've warned them so many times about this. Mainly because they've actually posted malicious memes and other posts that are not acceptable.
They won't listen, which is a huge problem. They've all received too many warnings and such. It wasn't until today I decided to do something about it, so I permanently muted a user for posting an unflavored pedobear meme.
I honestly don't mind seeing a little 4chan material here and there, because that's not gonna change. 4chan is bleeding into most websites and communities online and we can't really do much about it. It is to be expected. I've been to 4chan myself a lot in the past, but I was never "one of them". But when people try to turn other places into /b/, then it's a huge problem.
Honestly, I do not mind a little forum humor. But please, lolcats were never funny. Pedobear was never funny. If your jokes aren't classy and it makes you look bad, don't post it. If it's something you wouldn't want your parents to see, it doesn't belong.
Another problem is, I could just lock the thread (which I've wanted to do for so long). But I can't. There is another forum mod in the section and he's on their side, which I think is ridiculous. Any decent forum moderator would've seen that this thread is nothing but a bad thing, and it should not stay open. The other staff (including people who work at Last.fm HQ) agreed to closing it, even deleting it. I'm SO close to do it, regardless of what this other mod says. We had a staff vote on it, and it was pretty much everyone vs him. I just haven't locked it yet because I wanted to give them ONE last chance, mostly so he won't get mad at me. Why am I too nice sometimes?
It has gotten to the point where other regulars, people who have used the forums for 4+ years usually avoid that particular section. Not only do the /b/ers post in that one thread, but they've started to bring it into other threads. This is chasing away other users and it's a pretty clear problem.
So, today I made it clear that 1 more strike and the thread will be gone. I'm seriously done playing nice, because nothing good comes out of having that thread open. I want the old forumers to come back, I want new users to feel welcome again! I don't tolerate it when certain people rage at new users for pointing out the /b/ness and that it shouldn't be there. That's just so wrong. They think they run the forums and they scare away everywhere. I'm so tired of it. I wanna look forward to modding the place when I wake up, I don't wanna shrug it off and force myself to enter the section ever day. `-`
If it doesn't change from today on, they're gonna have to go back to 4chan for their shitty humor satisfaction. lol
Edit: This rant thread made me realize that I was being too nice. Right after I wrote it, I went on to lock the thread. Aw yeah.
