Perhaps you don't understand.
When you have the government paying for the rent and the other bills under your paycheck. Having 5$ a month for doing well in school is a privilege.
So having 100$ back then was a
LOT of money.
A DS for 110$ at this age is more reasonable, since I'm no longer under the effects of poverty. But I'd rather borrow my sisters. (which she got for her birthday yesterday)
