Man cured of HIV.

Stem Cell Transplant Cures HIV In 'Berlin Patient'
Blood -- Evidence for the cure of HIV infection by CCR5{Delta}32/{Delta}32 stem cell ...

Quote:

For the first time in history, a man has been cured of HIV. The patient, 42-year old Timothy Ray Brown was first hospitalized at Berlin at Germany’s Charite Universitatsmedizin hospital after he contracted acute myeloid leukemia in 2007. He underwent aggressive chemotherapy that destroyed the majority of his immune cells and finally, went through a risky stem-cell transplant that appears to have completely cured Brown of HIV.
Ain't that just dandy.

And that is why stem cell research is important.

Science +1

MsSquid 12-15-2010 10:52 AM

Too bad nothing like this will happen in America because of whining fundies.

Sharpkitty 12-15-2010 11:11 AM

For sure this cure took over a year tho :/ they need to seriously fund the research so we can see some potions faster. +1 for science woooot

WhatThePho 12-15-2010 11:14 AM

They were treating for cancer and ended up getting rid of HIV?

Light 12-15-2010 11:41 AM

/Cue people *****ing that this method is unacceptable or inhumane/violates the rule of god.. ect.

Lmao I can't wait to see that: Amazing cures(the devil/science) vs prayers(god)

Kongro 12-15-2010 12:27 PM

Still, that guy had such a slim chance to survive the treatment its not a very viable cure at all.

It's easier to refine something to be better, than trying to figure out what works in the first place.
Now that they have found the cure, it shouldn't be that much harder to make it viable.

yeah and the article on cnn said that the mutation in the bone marrow that the guy he got the transplant from only occurs in 1% of white population and even less in black population. something like that. i'm not too sure what that means but that sounds rare.

inb4 it's in 100% of polynesian pop or something

1stsim144 12-15-2010 10:14 PM

Wow.
HIV cures... This is what we need!!! OMG..

RoflKnife 12-15-2010 10:17 PM

HIV
Cancer
AIDS

Who's next on our medical hit list?

Bolter 12-16-2010 03:27 AM

AIDS is from HIV btw well looks like we are getting better now.

next would probably be H5N1, H1n! and so on.

It cures HIV perhaps, but I don't think this will be a procedure you'll see applied in hospitals in the near future.

I'll call this a stroke of luck.

Miyuki 12-16-2010 03:36 AM

"quite risky"...but at least it's a step

k0n 12-16-2010 05:26 AM

That's a very costy cure. Chemo that destroys your WBC and you have to get stem cell restoration.

You're pretty much destroying yourself and repairing your body with another body. I'm guessing this cost a fortune.
Now they know what may stop the triggers, they need to use something besides more stem cells. Otherwise, we'd be fighting over more fetus....

Also: Know your medical terms before using it :/
