Namco Bandai Japan has filed three new Tales of trademarks (which may or may not become the next Tales game).
The three trademarks are:
Tales of Zestoria テイルズ オブ ゼストリア
Tales of Creales テイルズ オブ クレアレス
Tales of Catastora テイルズ オブ カタストラ
To those who don't get how this works, Namco Bandai Japan files trademarks of possible Tales titles from time to time in order to reserve that title for their use. This may or may not become a future title. There are times when a title may never be used (past trademarked titles that we never got to see include Tales of Floweria and Tales of Unitia), then there are times when it does get used but is modified (Tales of Gracia -> Tales of Graces).
So what does this tell us? The next Tales of game is indeed in the works, and its title may be one of these three titles.
Last month, Namco Bandai filed three Tales of trademarks for what seems to be the next Tales of game: Tales of Zestoria, Tales of Creales and Tales of Catastora. This month, Namco Bandai filed two new additional trademarks which seem to be in line with Zestoria: Tales of Zestiria and Tales of Zestias.
Casual reminder that this does not exactly set in stone that the next Tales game will be one of these titles, but they are definitely leaning toward these. Whatever the next Tales game will be, it seems that they're leaning toward "TOZ."
These newly found trademarks are Tales of Link, Tales of Jin and Tales of Ansis.
Note that though these trademarks are indeed owned by Namco Bandai Games, it seems that the names in the Japanese katakana are spelled wrong, having the word "Tales" spelled as "テールズ" instead of "テイルズ".
Again, casual reminder that these trademarks do not mean that these very games will be coming. It just means that these are names they're considering for a future Tales game.
Siliconera found a trademark for Tales of Zestiria in Namco Bandai's European database. In the West, Namco Bandai also trademarked Tales of Hearts in 2012, and Tales of Innocence in 2011. Whether this leads to the next Tales of title being released in the West or not, it's interesting that out of all the names trademarked by Namco Bandai in Japan recently, this was the only one trademarked outside of Japan.
To recap, here are the other recent trademarks in Japan:
- Tales of Zestoria
- Tales of Zestias
- Tales of Link (Which ended up being the next smartphone game)
- Tales of Jin
- Tales of Ansis
- Tales of Memories
- Tales of Bibliotheca
- Tales of Favorite
I personally wouldn't read too much into this yet, but it is interesting that we have a Western trademark for a game that hasn't even been announced.
And again, casual reminder that this does not exactly set in stone that the next Tales game will be this, nor does it mean said game will be making it to the West... But it seems they are definitely leaning toward the probability of doing so. Whatever the next Tales game will be, it seems that they're leaning toward "TOZ."
