Overreactions are overreactions. As I mentioned in the OWS thread, it barely does anything if you're a citizen.
Here is the bill in case you're wondering. That part is section 1031/1032.
The overreaction was to an amendment that was submitted for this bill. Because of the wording on the amendment that was proposed, it would have struck out section 1032 and give the government the power to detain anyone. The protection you quoted from the bill is in section 1032.
Yup. It's the communist witch hunt all over again. Except now the witches are supposed terrorists and have no rights to a trial or anything else. America is over.

Salem Which Trial.
Mcarthysim.
Yep, I can't wait for the U.S to realize how stupid they were.

America may be over but we still have a chance to start a revolution. F**K the Peaceful Protest. obviously it not getting us no where.
Violence may not be the answer but it can be the Necessary one.
eventaully there will be blood ...
They will fight back.
it funny cuz I think America is starting to become like that movie...V for Vendetta...almost like anyway...
While I'd like it if things could change peacefully, I think you're right there. There most likely will be blood, but I think it's going to be because of martial law. Once the military gets sent out to stop OWS, it's probably going to trigger that civil war I was said was most likely going to happen. As soon as you see the military or the police kill one single protester, the shit is going to hit the fan.

there could be a peaceful way but I think the government might get us the slip...tricking us into something...
and now that Obama is Part of This...
well I wonder how Black people think about this...THE REAL BLACK PEOPLE!
so does this now consider Dictatorship or something ?
This guy's still the only person on Fox News I respect. And he brings up a pretty good point. The state governments are going to have to defend us against the federal government if we're going to have any rights left at all.

We're lacking a lot of things for a civil war to occur, namely a serious face of opposition to actually lead the other side. Not to mention that the military isn't going to be sent out to stop OWS any time soon. Not to mention it wouldn't even be a fair civil war given the numbers of the military versus like the 20,000 protesters. A civil war won't happen just because there's a bunch of white hipsters standing around. A civil war could happen if all of a sudden the 20k-odd protestors of OWS became suddenly ultra militant. Oh, but then it's not peaceful protest so technically it can be squashed.

Drama queen. I can't take you seriously when just because the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces wants the ability to actually dispose of terrorists (because you know, there is a War on Terrorism going on) you jump the gun on the end of America.
You really need to review your history because this kind of stuff happens all the time in American history.
(See: Salem Witch Trials, McCarthyism, Election of 1864, Andrew Jackson's presidency, the Alien and Sedition Acts, Teapot Dome scandal, Nixon, Watergate Scandal, Vietnam "war" protests to name a small handful off the top of my head)

You are aware that state and local policemen are the ones in charge of the OWS crackdown..... right? Yup, they care about rights.

I know it's peaceful and can be squashed. I didn't say the protesters would lead the militant opposition. I don't expect them to be involved in any violence except to be trampled underfoot.

The Commander-in-Chief has already assassinated an American citizen without due process. Or did you miss out on the whole Anwar al-Alwaki thing? Not saying he was a good guy, but he was still an American citizen and the whole "fair trial" thing was skipped in favor of the execution.

That was kind of the point I was making here. History repeats itself.

Yeah, I'm aware of that, too. And you bringing up that whole point just lends to my "America is over" point. Sure it's dramatic, but in the grand scheme of things, it's true.

It's not like the trial would be fair anyways. It's a lose-lose situation anyways because more than likely the trial would be absurdly stacked against al-Alwaki's favor making it look like America has pseudo-trials only to appease the Constitution.

Yes... but no. You implied that America was "over"; Revolution is imminent and we all need to abandon ship. But in reality my point was that all kinds of restrictions on civil liberties occur throughout American history, they were all received largely negatively, yet the country persevered. You imply (or what I at least got from what you said) was that always America ended and just rebuilded itself.

But in the grand scheme of things we still have a damn good country. Sure our rights are getting cut back, but I'd sure as hell rather live in America than say Rwanda. I'd sure as hell rather live in America than Russia. I'd sure as hell rather live in America than India. (and so on) At the end of the day, a crisis in America is a good day for most countries.

Yeah, I wouldn't expect him to win a trial in the least. My point isn't that he should win it ('cuz obviously, he wasn't a nice guy), but that there still should have been a trial so at least the American people would have an illusion, if nothing else, of due process.

No, what I was implying was that we've never lost so many rights all in one 4 year term of a presidency until now. There is still a good chance the country will recover from this, but it's going to take a lot of work. The drama of my "America is over" thing was largely to convey the full gravity of the situation, but I probably should've left some silver lining so as not to get people down. I don't believe this is the end, really, but more of a new beginning.

Hmm. I think Rwanda was a good example here, but I'm not too sure about Russia or India. I don't really know much about what life in Russia's like currently, but I know India's actually pretty well off, considering they got the vast majority of our outsourced jobs.

Pretty sure there has been, if you do some digging. Though I don't know what you'd consider a "reliable source".

Lying to the American public is always a political mistake. Watergate Scandal. Clinton-Lewinski debacle. Teapot Dome Scandal.

India has severe brain drain. All the smart and intelligent people leave India for Western Europe or the U.S. because there is nothing for them there. I would assume since you consider yourself educated you wouldn't want to work for Dell as a live support crew member. :x
As for Russia... it's had some post-USSR collapse economic troubles and kind of has this vendetta against the U.S. We don't hate each other, but we're not fans of each other really. Russia also arrested and tried a high-ranking CEO because he was gaining too much power. As far as I know, Putin (head of government of Russia) owns the company now.
When it comes down to it, I'd rather live in America than any country in the world. The only places that could even compete with America are Western Europe, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore. Other than those countries, I'd rather just chill in America.

Just a last word here:
It doesn't matter what the law says it will do and what it won't do, it all comes down to how the law is actually used.
Examples? National Interstate and Defense Highways Act. Our highway system is designed for use by the military, and that was how it was able to be passed. I don't know about you, but if I was around in 1956 I would be scared. Why would our military need a comprehensive road system? Canada is peaceful. Mexico is neck-deep in its own problems and militarily weak. Why would our military need to move efficiently through our country? Well.... now we (Civilians) use those delightful roads to move across the country.
The poll tax and reading tests laws during the Civil Rights movement in the South. Nothing wrong with the state extracting revenue from elections. Nothing wrong with the state making sure the voters are actually "educated" enough to vote. How'd it turn out? It disenfranchised the African Americans. Hell, let's throw in "Separate but equal" and Jim Crow laws. Were the facilities equal? No. Were the laws racist? Yup.
Those are just two examples, but the point is that it all comes down to how the law is used. Since America is a stable country and the President is often a very sane man with honorable intentions (as in, he doesn't want to make an authoritarian regime). If this was in like Egypt.... then I'd be concerned.

So it's okay to lie about peoples' constitutional rights, too? I don't really get what you're trying to say here.
