Rap has always been known for its controversial topics, but back in the 80's and the 90's there were some rappers notorious for their intellectual rap bits.

Now, its like rap is the thing for people with limited vocabulary which tends to revolve around certain swear words or insulting terms. The first one to come to mind is this, but i know there are many more, but now all we hear are raps about stupid shit

the mid/late 60s to late 90s were the 'golden age' of modern music, regardless of the genre
nowadays people simply make music that is simple and catchy just because the mindless masses only care to hear music that is simple and catchy

Very few musicians actually care to make music with intelligent lyrics, because, why bother?

I'm sure if you look hard enough, you can find rap that's both appealing lyrically and musically, it's sure as hell been that way for most of the metal, hardcore, and occasionally even post-rock(although this is instrumental music for the most part) music I've looked at

I'm a firm believer music for the most part died in the 90s. I'm no rap fan, but Run-DMC gets some pretty good respect from me for doing a great Aerosmith cover.

Seriously, look at alot of indie bands nowadays. The Beatles were essentially indie for the first album or two I believe, along with several other great classic bands. What went wrong that people can't seem to make good music even if not belonging to a good label?

Lyrics have died in the new generation, music relies much more heavily on the beat nowadays. I mean, the only rap you hear now is people bragging about how good they are, how many albums they sell, how they used to sell cocaine, how the women love them, and how much they love booze. A great deal of recent rock music has lyrics that don't even make SENSE when you actually look them up.

Lyrics are getting overshadowed by the beat. But keep in mind, this is really the party generation. No one cares what you say, as long as they can dance to it.

there are intellectual rappers you just have to look for em. you can't listen to mainstream and expect to find it usually.
