Default War Movies

War isn't a fun place to be but for me, it's a a fun thing to watch

Anyone have a list of favorite or must-see war movies to watch? Preferably medieval ages and earlier, but modern warfare is good too.

pure war is kinda hard.

of course at the top is Saving Private Ryan.
I will recommend The Hurt Locker even though it's about Iraq and there isn't much battles it still worth watching.
Braveheart has a bunch of good scenes
Gladiator has the opening battle.
Kingdom of heaven has some nice epic battles. very gladiator like scenes. same director.
Jeanne D'arc with mila jovovich has some decent battles in there.
The patriot has some revolutionary battles.
I'm having trouble remembering movies featuring epic medieval warfare. I don't think there have been all that many good ones. There is a lot of WW2 and Vietnam stuff out there. They are really the dominant in stuff that I can remember.

I'm also interested in seeing if anyone has some good medieval warfare movies they can suggest.

i forgot robin hood prince of thieves with kevin costner
13th warrior but those aren't relly war.

"Letters from Iwo Jima" and I guess "Flags of our Father" (which I have yet to see, but want to).

While Letters from Iwo Jima is not a "fun" movie to see, it is damn good.

Alexander was bad. irish accents for macedonians... the big battle scene is just dust and some stabbings. it's more of a telling of his short life than about his wars and conquest.
also be ready for homosexual undertones.

forgot to mention Troy in the recommendations.

non medieval there is so much.

Saving private ryan
platoon
apocalypse now
full metal jacket
the longest day
Patton
The great escape
the dirty dozen
thin red line (its not bad except for the flashbacks)
Buffalo Soldiers (cold war, not really war, just about drug dealing army people stationed in germany, good stuff though)
Das Boot
The deer hunter
a bridge too far
kelly's heroes
enemy at the gates
jarhead
glory
gettysburg
MASH

of those you should watch SPR, Patton, AN, The longest day and the great escape at the very least.

I like your list possibly every movie I was going to say

Last Samurai is a must watch and Black Hawk Down for some pew pew action >=D

Blood Diamond and Hotel Rwanda story lines were influenced by war but I would consider them more of an action/dramatic kind of movie rather then a pure war movie.

Like so many people here already said, I really liked Saving Private Ryan and The Last Samurai. SPR, I had to watch almost three times before I was able to actually say 'I finished it' simply because I'd get interrupted every time. :[ I LOVE LST - the scenery, outfits, everything was so awesome! :c

I've also seen:
Good Morning, Vietnam
Flag of our Fathers*
300
Pearl Harbor
La vita bella (Life is Beautiful - Italian movie, very sad :c)
Malena (not really sure if it counts orz)

* - I thought it was a bit tedious, but I think that's when I was starting to fall from the war genre. :c

I also saw a bit of Jarhead, but it freaked me to see someone get a mark from that metal... poker thing. orz

A couple of good old WW2 movies are A Bridge Too Far, Patton, and Force 10 from Navarone.
