As I said, Lunia has 3d models on a 2d backdrop. All you're doing is confirming that. The act of switching from 3d to 2d in games usually implies the alteration of multiple directions, at least as far as fighters go.
If you want to just make Lunia have 2d sprites instead of 3d models, that's fine. The game would more or less play exactly the same, though it would be annoying to create so many sprites. My assumption on the thread was that the game would discard the previous implications of 8 directions, putting them instead as right and left, jump and crouch as in most games. Perhaps even a side scroller beat em type of perspective. I gathered this assumption from the random FF sprites he used in his screenshot.
