Default Why do you want to work for us?

Does anyone know how to answer this question with confidence it was a good answer and he was pleased with it?

In all the questions I'm ever asked, this is the one I come up empty.
I know I can't just outright say "oh, yeah dude I'm just working so I can get some cash" but aside from the truth which is the cash, what would I say instead to sweet talk the employer?

Those who've been hired before with the question asked, your information is greatly valued.

If you haven't been hired or had a job before, please refrain from posting, unless you do know the proper answer.

depends on what position/company you're planning to work for.

for retail:
"i come to your store often and i am never disappointed with the service. the workers always look happy and it seems like a very nice environment to work in."

from there, you could also through in something like you want a company that gives you a chance to move up and get better, etc.

It's very situationally dependent. If you're interviewing (I.E.: in person), then it's okay to begin your answer in a joking manner, such as, "Work? I must have the wrong place," or maybe even a joke about the economy. Simple things like that to display that you're someone who is easy to get along with. After that, you might continue answering with something like, "But seriously, I would like to work here because I've noticed the comfortable environment and friendly staff, and feel that I would be a good addition to the team." Keep it short, you can imagine that they probably don't want to hear everyone they interview during the day give a 7 minute answer.

If you're answering the question on a form (job application), then I'd recommend you just keep it serious. For instance, if you're applying for a position in a childcare facility, something like, "I have experience working with children and have admired your well-kept facilities, as well as the behavior of your staff and students."

So yeah, the level of seriousness that needs to be taken can really vary from one situation to another, and being able to *read* people is always a plus.

Some employers value honesty. You could always say your main motivation is to support yourself and your family and that you're a hard worker and ready to seize any opportunity being presented to you.

Hm. I got this question on a job interview in which I was successful. My answer may as well be useless to you, but I'll tell you how I tackled it lol. As Glarbage said, it can be quite situational. Type of company REALLY affects your answer imo.

I applied for a professional services firm. I was really going for the company that interviewed me; as in not just for the money, but because I really wanted to work there.

This question to me is really about how intimately you know the company. Specifically: What is is about the company that made me choose it and not another?
What aspect of the company appealed to me? History, current status, nature of work, specialty etc.
Does the company's values line up with your values? This can be as simple as this: the job you're going for is a store called 'The Good Guys'. Show them that you're a 'good guy' lol.
In my case I went to their website and looked at their 'Vision and Beliefs' page lol. I also talked to employees of the company.

Spoiler!

Don't spew all your knowledge about the company to the interviewer: rather give some specific details about the company that impresses you the most and relate it to why these things make you tick.

Honesty is a big thing like Javier said, faking this question can seem really obvious. Be creative and personal.

Mention a general interest in the job you would be doing.

If it's a retail job you can say about boosting confidence and improving communication with people as well as saying an interest with the products you'd be selling.

Also expanding knowledge about the items. For example, when I applied for the job I'm currently employed in [retail: Hardware store] I said that being in a retail job really helps me to gain confidence with myself and around other people, and also that I'd like to learn about the sort of things we sell as it will be helpful later in life.

So, general interest, expanding knowledge, and then of course you can say to support yourself/family.

You can mention that working in a retail store allows for interpersonal interaction, and that you look forward to the opportunity of meeting different people every day. That would have the effect of making you seem more attractive as a candidate, because the best retail personnel are the genial ones who build rapport with customers.

You can also expound on your interest in the retail industry as a whole, and the fact that working your way up from a retail store is good training for future endeavors. Managers often soften up at forward-looking answers like this, because it implies earnestness and longevity. Everyone hates those 2-week employees who quit at whim.

They're mostly BS, but eh.

More detail -
  • This position I'm applying for is an overnight staff position, at my local supermarket
  • My plan is to work primarily as a 2 month summer job, it's unlikely I'll keep going through to September, since I intend to work and earn the money I need and bank the rest. (simple 1200$ needed)
  • This will be a full time position.

As a supermarket job, you shouldn't have to make too much up, as it doesn't specialise in any particular product such as clothing, or tools for example, you don't need to give too many reasons for wanting the job.

Interaction with people, organisation, confidence
and of course earning money for yourself. Supermarket employers generally know this anyway. If it was a store selling something more specific then you can pose an interest to the items you'd be selling.

^ I'm gonna combo break this for a sec...

Though I have never applied for a job (yet), in the future, I'll know what to do.

For instance, talks of "what is my salary" is not important, or actually not needed to say at all.

I will not leave my future job's title here (though could be known for a few users here), but when I apply I will not say "I need some money ahurhur" but serious or rather interesting comments like

"I've seen your company's work, I am very interested in becoming one so I can also contribute to the great help of [company censor]"

and

"I would like this job because not only will I be able to interact with my co-workers and others, but also with the players, because I feel most confident and poised when being called for a player's help and interacting with them on events online." (<- hint there.)

Yes, money may be important, but on top of that the person, including I, must find your future dream job to actually be fun. Helping people is an aspect of mine, and most of the time, I find it fun. Therefore, I match, but I also want to interact with not just the players, but with people that work with me, and eventually become more than just co-workers. And I know the convenience inside the company must be really great, so I'll know it'll feel like a new home.

I believe this could be the icebreaker.
The last job I went to an interview for, the employer was very clean and didn't crack a smile, making him very serious and intimidating.

Should it be very unfortunate the employer at right now Wal-Mart is going to be like that, I'll probably just omit the top sentence before I end up getting shot.

Using all the good advice above, I'll hybridize it to fit the position.

yea, there is proper technique to avoid answering that, i went to a defence force interview the other day with a friend, they ask why u want to be in defence force. u really need to put the money stuff as the last thing u say and try create a statement rather meaningful. and most importantly, u need to show them your passion which increases your chances of not only getting into the wateva thing u want to get in for but also into a better position. In my case, i said something like "i've always wanted to be able involved with peace keeping and defence due to the volatile nature of the world, i also like to become someone who people will respect as i have never really been truly respected or appreciated through out much of my high school life. i want to be the solution, not the problem. Being in the defence force not only satisfy that, it also gives me an oppurtunity to become independent (indirect way of saying u want the cash) and deciplined which will have many positive effects on my life starting from being part of the defence force and wherever life takes me. That is why i will dedicate and commit myself to the Australian Defence Force."
Something close to that, i had a few stops and blank moments seeing that it was the first time i went to a job interview.
Me and my friend spent hours trying to think of what to say when that question came up. and it does take quite a long time to gather your thoughts and organise them succintly.
I'm not trying to be rude or anything but a person cannot show their passion for a job unless they really have it. It's rather obvious to tell whether someone really wants the job and for what reason they want it.
Hope i helped even tho i'm not exactly experienced with job interviews.

I've always given a stock answer for this question and landed jobs before so it works, I guess.

Just a simple "I want to serve customers and satisfy their needs. I also would like to spread flowers, happiness, and rainbows to every nook and cranny of our Mother Earth". More of the former, not really the latter. But you get the idea.
