Default Pet Cockatiel?

Not sure if this goes here but oh well.

Thinking of getting one, never had a pet bird before, but I've had pets from fish to dogs to mice etc, but never a bird.

I know that I would probably like to get a male, since I have read that they are easier to train because they don't lay eggs (though I am aware that they make a lot more noise than the usual female.)

I'm also aware that it would probably be best to not put any type of mirror toys in it's cage, since I've also read that this could confuse a bird and or make it think that it's their "friend"

As for getting its wings clipped, since I've never raised a bird I should probably have it's wings clipped so it'll be easier to train when its young and once they grow back see if it'll work out.

So any owners wish to give me info about how to raise a cockatiel

also i'll probably try to train via a clicker. Is that a good idea?

Lol @ large red edit .___.

You knew Id look at this lul.

Regarding the mirrors, some plain dont like them. Mine, for instance, doesnt give a damn about mirrors.

And always, ALWAYS keep their wings clipped >_> Even after having mine about 8-9 years now, hes obviously very tame (Hell, he wouldnt last outside anyway. Bugs scare him ffs >_>; ), I still keep his wings clipped regularly.

Clicker is kind of iffy, they can learn by treats too, but something like that is really just preference on how you wanna do it.

Main thing is, birds thrive on attention. Of course this is especially true with the large parrots, but even smaller ones like tiels need attention. How you go about it just depends on conditions at home I guess. Some people keep their birds out all day while theyre home, some only do a few hours a day.

Most stuff is really a 'as it comes up' sort of thing, since birds dont all act the same :x If you've already looked up information, you've probably already skimmed through most of the basic 'To-Know' information.

Also, as a rule of thumb, -most- things that are healthy for people are healthy for birds. They can have junk food too, but be smart about it, no chocolate or sweets or anything like that, and sparingly. Mine loves popcorn periodically *-*; And pasta/potatoes.

I remembered that rant on how one of your cockatiels was ontop of your fridge and you couldn't reach it.

Anyway yeah, do you own a male? If so does it get too loud at times? Like how would you calm it down? Just playing with it or giving it some treats?

Mhmm mines male. Being loud could be for a variety of reasons. Ever since we were forced to put down the other male we had a year ago (20+ year old we got from a friend, we had him 2 days shy of 2 years, had to put him down due to a cancer on his leg), mine was kind of depressed for a while since the two were always out together, and ever since then, if I go too far, he'll get loud and try to fly to me ._. Just a more serious case of separation anxiety for him, I guess. Half the time I cant walk to the other side of my room without him panicking.

A lot of times they'll get loud when they want attention. How you react to it determines a lot. You dont want to get mad and yell or anything, or else they'll associate that as the reward for being loud.

Yeah, pretty much goes with any animal someone is trying to train.

Well those are all of my questions...

...Know of any breeders in the area? (probably not)

I'd prefer to buy from a breeder than from a pet store if it can be helped.

Sorry, no :x

And yeah. Always try to get a hand-fed, their easier to deal with, and usually want human contact. The "hand-fed" birds they claim to sell in pet stores are usually never truly hand-fed, pretty damn skittish things. And theyre more expensive than getting one from a breeder too. I did get mine from a store, but I got lucky; he was a hand-fed that got shipped to the store xD I still remember what had caught my attention was that he was the only bird that came to the window, the others stayed back, and he wanted attention :x

I know a few folks who have birds and didn't get their wings clipped. But I also know people who did.
More importantly a good friend of mine is really into birds. Not just keeping them as pets but breeding them too. She never clips their wings and doesn't sell them to anyone who plans to. Unnecessary mutilation is not cool on pets.

Clipping their wings is not mutilation. Im sorry, but whoever told you that is.... Tch. Wing clipping serves safety purposes. I clip the wings on mine so he doesnt, oh I dunno, fly out of the damn house, or up into a fan or something. My room, where the cage is, usually has the fan turned off, but the rest of the house isnt going to do the same for one little bird that stays primarily in my room. Granted, small parrots like tiels can still fly up a good height even with clipped wings, but they wont go as far.

Better safe than sorry. If you think feather clipping is a form of mutilation, then I wish you luck when your birds fly off.

Clipping a birds wings is pretty much the equivalent of removing a dogs dew claw (except its not painful at all)

It ensures their safety.
