The better theory is the ladder one. If a guy attempts to jump from the friend ladder to the bf ladder, most fall into the abyss and fall out of the girl's life. It is the likely result, and still causes strain if they somehow don't fall. No one becomes happy in the end.

i am not a nice guy. never was. i don't see it happening in the future. i'm always the jerk and although i don't like it i can't break out of it. i'm not a long term relationship person at all...

it'd take a very special person to change that

My brother is kinda like the 'nice guy.' He's usually friends with International students who are only here for a few years, and he usually lets them stay at our house (>_>; ) and treats all of the girls and guys very well. I've talked to his girlfriend and she says she is sometimes jealous, but she knows he treats her a little bit more special than the others. My brother holds doors and lets girls cry on his shoulder, but that's just how he is now. I doubt he'll turn into one of those jerks, but yeah. Sweet guys can turn into jerks just 'cause of women.

I agree with this, I have had one ex friend who we used to hang out a lot and when she needed someone to hang out with or go to the movies or have a shoulder to cry on when she was having problems I was the one she would come too. As I was getting attached to her I was afraid to ask her out on a "Date" and not just as friends because that was one thing I was scared of...wondering if she only thought of me as a "friend". Then we grew apart when she dated more guys and when they treated her like shit she would always come back and I frankly was always sick and tired of it after so long because the feelings were not on the same page...I was basically her get-a-way vacation tool...

Even though a part of me misses her... Being played as a tool wasn't my thing in the end

Most people in general like to live with fun, heh. Thinking logically doesn't always win the motive of bored people, well at least to the "nice girls" they're meeting.

If not, then either way, nice guys who end up being an ******* or become a little tougher probably realize that the nice girls aren't the "nice girls" they were trying to sway in their arms. Changing their approach to another relationship is up to them. I've been into this situation before and I've rethought somethings from my delusional first time with this. My approach next time will still be ambiguous to the girl. To me, that means "nice guys" can't always become complete jerks to the next relationship. It could just mean that we're just being more aware of who people are in general.

Yeah, there still some nice guys (I believe) out there. It's just that it'll be much harder to tap into that mind set for them. It's like healing a wound that turns into a hard scab.
