I would imagine that all those unnecessary layers would make everything a lot harder & overcomplicated for you though. Also, creating a bunch of layers tends to increase the chances of your art file becoming unstable & crashing whatever art program you're using, especially if it's photoshop.

If you can, try not to use more layers than you need to. Line art shouldn't really take up more than one layer, nor should the shading although this may depend on how much detail you're putting into it.

Learning how to shade correctly can be a huge pain in the ass, I'll admit. What exactly are you struggling with? Light sources, colors, or something else?

I memorize which layer has what, but I think I do it because I'm paranoid of messing something up and being unable to undo that layer .-.

having many layers is good, i usually have one for each thing i modify, for example if you do a face there are

1) eyes
2) hairs
3) accessory (1 each)
4) skin

this way you can mod one thing without screwing the rest, the final blend may be harder, but it's worth it.

The Sharpe Way:

Layer 1: Additional (Sparkles, foreground effects, lighting, anything that is used above the lineart.)
Layer 2: Lineart
Layer 3: Shading
Layer 4: Base color (Sometimes I split this into three layers, eyes, skin, clothes, but I usually combine them all into one once I finish.)
Layer 5: Background

That's usually how I do it.
