Default Research Paper (computers)

I have this huge 12 page paper or whatever I'm supposed to write on some pre-selected topics. I chose cloud computing (Cloud computing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia), but when I asked my professor the criteria, it included going back 100 years. Well, cloud computing doesn't go back 100 years. It's really frustrating, how are you supposed to write on something that didn't exist? But that's another story.

So questions are:
Should I bail to another topic that actually has material past 100 years? (it's unlikely I can get one that goes back 100 years at this point)
Is there anything LIKE, SIMILAR (in any way, shape or form) cloud computing in the past?

I keep asking around (even an expert in cloud computing) and they just keep saying nope, nothing, zip, zilch, etc. which is really not helping.

You can try looking for the thing that inspired cloud computing. Or try something similar, like libraries or something to that effect could have been like a cloud where local residents could store information.

Look at the business issues that paved the way for the emergence of cloud computing. Some things that come to mind are:

1. Need for rapid scalability
2. Risk mitigation
3. Budget restrictions prohibiting large-scale infrastructure deployment
4. SLAs and availability
5. Spare resources on existing large-scale infrastructures (i.e. Amazon and AWS)
6. Limited organizational resources

Although cloud computing doesn't go back 100 years, take employee payroll. Companies have always needed to pay employees. It's gone from manual books to single-instance computer programs to hosted (cloud) services like BofA's payroll services and ADP.
