Default Which one of the two should I get?

So I'm planning to buy a new handheld game this Black Friday.
Since I don't buy games often, I've decided to buy a game that will last a long time, most preferably RPGs. So at the moment, I have two choices:

Pokemon Platinum for the DS
Monster Hunter Freedom Unite for the PSP

I'm interested in both games, but I can only get one. The last time I bought a pokemon game was five years ago, and that was FireRed for the GBA. As a result, I now have an huge army of lv. 100 pokemons in that game, waiting to be transferred to Pokemon Platinum/Diamond/Pearl.

Monster Hunter, on the other hand, looked very appealing because I get to hunt gigantic monsters using awesome-looking swords, lances, crossbows, hammers, and so on. However, when I downloaded the demo, I was overwhelmed due to it being hard as hell and having terrible controls. However, after playing the demo to death, I got a bit more used to it, and am now enjoying it a bit more. So in the end, I'm still interested in the game.

So, which one do you guys think I should buy? If you know other handheld RPGs that are good and last a long time, feel free to post them here. However, do not suggest the following games, because I either have them already or I have no interest in them:

-Disgaea games
-Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology
-Any "Tales of" games
-Yggdra Union
-Front Mission DS
-Rhapsody DS
-Atelier Annie
-Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions

Oh, and if possible, try to only suggest games that are pretty recent and are still available in stores like Gamestop, because I don't want to work my butt off searching for old games. And also, don't suggest any import games, please.

Do you have friends that play Monster Hunter as well? If you do, I suggest it. If not, don't. It gets into a boring grindfest without any friends to play online with. >:

Hey Juu, are you who I think you are?

Yeah, you can't go wrong with Pokemon, but Monster Hunter's great too, especially with the release of Ad-hoc party. But if Monster Hunter's steep learning curve seems too much for you, then you're probably better off with Pokemon.

Uh, have we met somewhere before?

Anyways, no, I don't have any friends who play Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. So maybe I'll take that into consideration.

The last time I saw someone stream Monster Hunter, he was doing cross country in game just to chase down one monster that just kept running away. Took nearly 30 minutes to kill it. I don't think that's worth the time. Maybe there are other redeeming factors to it, but I have yet to see it.

IMO, Pokemon is a better choice.

That's practically the game, lol. Spending loads of time killing monsters to make cool armor, which is why it's more fun with people to play with.

I would say Monster Hunter if you have a PS3(ad-hoc party) or if you can use xlink kai.
The game in the beginning is, as you said, hard as hell. I can assure you though, you will get better if you keep playing it. I find the game to be very satisfying in the sense that the game requires a great amount of skill. It's not based on "leveling up" but skill and that adds to the satisfying feeling when you beat a monster. Of course it does require you to farm a lot because to get gears you're going to have to farm a certain monster for their carves. In the end if you don't mind playing by yourself I say go for Monster Hunter. If you have the option to play with others though, definitely go with MH.
