Fusing items?

I read about this somewhere but I forgot the name of it and I remember the explanation of it not being that clear. So I'd like the name and a better explanation.

Like...if I were to fuse boots that took up the shoes/shorts slots with shoes that only took the shoes slot, would I be able to wear shorts with it then? If I have a mask which takes up all 4 head slots(i think it does O.o), can I fuse 4 items that each take up one of those slots into it?

Fusion is a strictly one to one item process.
