Pet control?

Was wondering if anybody knew how to directly control pets. Someone randomly gave me one and its extremely powerful at my level but I don't have any clue how to control it, and i've seen it fight and just 2 shot things I fight. Any idea? Or does it just attack only when it gets attacked? Or is it something like my level needs to be higher than its?

I usually use that wiki for information, except for craft trees, which i use this wiki for. Overall, I use the other wiki much more, but I use this site for the forum, cuz the forums here are more active.
