Default Advice on which hdd to get

I just got a coupon from newegg that's giving me 10% off on any item I choose and I decided to get a new HDD to backup my external HDD and main HDD. I'm having a bit of trouble deciding which one to get though.

Newegg.com - Western Digital Caviar Green WD20EARS 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

Newegg.com - SAMSUNG Spinpoint F4 HD204UI 2TB 5400 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

The Caviar Green is cheaper but I hear that it has a very high rate of failure. The Samsung is a bit more expensive and it seems to be a more reliable drive as well (I have one at the moment). Any alternatives are good as well.

I've got good experience with Western Digital so far, I've had 3 HDD's which were WD's and I never had a problem. I would personally go for the Western Digital, but that's up to you.

You're going to use it as a backup, which means you wont be using it all the time. A failure wouldn't be a disaster because you still would have your files on your primary HDD.

If you don't trust Western Digital because of the failures you heard about, then go for the SAMSUNG.

Well, I can vouch for Western Digital - My 500Gb Caviar Green has been my primary hard disk for 1.5 years now, and is still going strong.

Go for the Samsung. It's just for backup storage so reliability > speed.

WD
Green failure rates was high in the first few drives, it is pretty much ok now.
I had 2 greens fail within 2 years thou i have 6 in total.
But 1 was just bad sector and the other was totally dead. (Used it in my Drobo, so nothing was lost)
i would still recommend WD, if you want something green and reliable you can get WD Green AV-GP.

1. Temp (Cooler when compared to other drives)
2. 5 years warranty (That's for my country, the rest are usually 3 years) [Played a really huge factor as disks are easily dead nowadays]

Now that WD has bought over Hitachi's Storage manufacture, who knows what will happen in the future.

Just avoid Seagate and you're good to go.

For storage, just calculate price. Cost/GB. Lower is better, since you won't be leaving the drive on constantly. It's for storage after all.
