Windows 7

There's been so much hate for Vista. I do wonder if Windows 7 can cure this plague MS imposed upon itself.

I haven't tried Vista and have opted to stick to XP for practical reasons (application & driver compatibility for enterprise apps, mostly), so I'd like to hear from Windows 7 users if it has gotten any better.

- How much resources does it hog? How much faster is it compared to Vista?
- Any issues with backwards-compatibility?

I've been seeing reviews that it's so much better than Vista on the above aspects, but can it compare to XP?

Well, for one, I felt that Windows 7 was a stripped-down version of Vista — less clutter, less eye candy effect and thus, less obnoxious.

Secondly, the machines we have now are far more powerful than they were 3 years ago when people first beta-tested Windows Vista. We have Core 2 Duo and Quad Core rigs with 2GB to 4GB DDR2/DDR3 RAM so system requirements are not an issue for most people. The performance of Windows 7 on these machines are fantastic. Imagine if people tested Windows 7 back then with the PC configuration of that time.

To me, Windows 7 is faster, more functional and smarter. Some even claims it nearing the way OS X behaves though I can’t attest to that as I don’t use OS X. There are a lot of tricks up its sleeve, shortcuts to more commonly used functions and ways to de-clutter the desktop. It even has some special features set aside for tablet PCs (which I will share once I completed the testing on one).

Lastly, there’s very little issue on device driver compatibilities. Since Windows 7 mostly adopted Vista drivers, adding up new devices on the system didn’t present any problematic issue. This wasn’t the situation when people migrated to Vista from XP.

7 takes over from where Vista left off - most driver compatibility issues were already resolved, so there isn't much problem with those.

The install and startup time for 7 is also shorter. Loving it.

Too bad not all devices support Device Stage yet.

I don't want to try out Windows 7, until 1.) I get a 64-bit computer, and 2.) When they release the official version; I feel iffy installing things that are in beta.

I won't download Windows 7 ever. Windows 7 is just a lame plan to wipe XP off the market.

they released a beta (i think it was free ), i was going to try it out, but too late, they canceled that page about new window 7. waiting for official one ^^

I've got the beta installed on my spare PC
It runs significantly better than Vista and boots quicker than the previously installed XP did
No complaints here.

Windows 7 is prettier and faster than Vista. However, it still has some compatibility issues. To be expected. It's in Beta.

I run the beta once in a while in VMware on my Windows XP computer. I tried running Vista Basic on VMware and it was a turn on, crash loop. Honestly, I'm a person who prefers performance>graphics (yeah, I'm one of those people who right after they get a game, opens options and puts graphics to minimum, should see my XP, I turned off themes, wallpaper, and visual effects XD). The graphics are very nice, and it makes it so much nicer that it actually runs with good performance. Having fixed several computers for friends who have Vista, I absolutely hate it.

I'm saving money (since I'm a full time student, no job, no license, no allowance, no income at all, not counting my Birthday and Christmas, which even then I don't get much, about $100 total tops) to get a nice computer; not wasting money buying weaker computers in the process, I'm going straight to the powerful ones, and with Windows 7 when it comes out. I have $445 saved, so I guess I've got a ways to go.

Review:
Great OS, Vista graphics, better than XP performance (with full graphics, Ultimate version tested), few issues even in Beta (as far as I've tested).

Dell Dimension 4600
Memory: 1.5gb DDR
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 - 2.6MHz
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 4000 (64mb)
Hard Drive: 80GB ATA (Yes, it has been killing me Q_Q)
A bit old, had it for a while, the CD-RW drive has a bug that won't let it write.

Anybody want to donate their computer or a component to me, I'll gladly take it

I'm planning on getting a 64 bit laptop and windows 7. Hopefully by then it'll be released and in working order or I'll have to multi boot windows XP =(
