My First Console Experience

Posted 10-07-2008 at 02:11 PM by VorpalBunny
Was an Atari 2600. I can remember having this back when I was 6, and just hooking the thing up and keeping it hooked up was a pain. You had this little black box you had to hook to the console and then to the TV, and chances are more than one person decided to go with tape just to keep the U connectors (or whatever they are called) together.

The details about how I got this console were sketchy, but I distinctly remember the games being sold at the local K-Mart on a small wire rack next to the women's dresses. I still have a copy of E.T. lying around somewhere, but I don't consider that to be the most annoying game I've played on the console. The top prize goes to Kangaroo, because of the hideously annoying death yelp the kangaroo gives when it dies. It's honestly more annoying than the dog laugh from Duck Hunt. Seriously. That, and the dumb monkey that throws crap at you if you let it get to the top. Punching that annoying critter in the face before it got to throw stuff at you was one of the most satisfying parts of the game. Screw rescuing your baby kangaroo and doing a little happy dance after, punching that dumb monkey was where it was at. They should have called the game Monkey Puncher instead, because that was the best part of the game.

Then there was Joust. I was amazed I never got seizures from playing this game, because the moving sprites would blink like crazy whenever you stood still or ran on a platform. It was also one of the first games to scare the crap out of me. Most people would define their traumatic game moment with the Yeti in Ski Free, the Grue in Zork, or that shark in the flooded room in Resident Evil (anyone who's played it couldn't forget), but for me, it was some purple crocodile thing that would fly across the screen and kill you if you didn't finish the map quick enough. The thing can't be killed, it chased after you, and it had it's own little mechanical roar to signal it's presence. It was the stuff nightmares were made of, and it made it's way into the game. I watched through the Saw and Hostel series without freaking out, but the sound of that immortal croc from Joust still puts chills down my spine D:

One of the things that made the 80s what they were, were fake oak finishes. Everything had them. Game consoles, televisions, and most walls. They were IKEA before IKEA even existed D:
