Summer Troll Food: Popsicles!
Yes I know it's late July already. It doesn't feel like summer here so I forgot WHY IS IT SO COLD ;_;
Very few things are more satisfying on a hot day than a tasty frozen treat. For most of us, when we were kids this meant the good ol Popsicle. Frozen pops have been around for a while, and are so popular that there's numerous kits for making your own pops right at home.
They're generally really easy to make too! The mold for them are easy to find and not too expensive, but there's other ways to make em too.
Tips for making ice pops without pop molds:
- A plastic cup with a popsicle stick or even a spoon does the job nicely.
- A humble ice cube tray with some plastic wrap stretched over the top and toothpicks punched through makes for some nice, small pops.
- Almost any small, plastic container with a shape that makes for easy removal (straight edges, wider opening than the interior, etc).
- little plastic snack bags make for good ones too, especially if they are small and long (in the Philippines these are commonly sold as "Ice candy")
Tips for removal
- If you have a hard time pulling your pop out, try running some warm water over the outside to melt it just a little, which should help it pull out.
- Don't pull too hard on the stick if it's not coming out of the mold. Doing that will usually pull the stick out (or sometimes break the stick).
Popsicle flavor ideas:
You don't have to use the conventional frozen juice or kool-aid ones, since those can get boring. These are tasty and easy ideas that will work great and sometimes better:
- Fruit pureed with milk
- Pureed soft fruits like Bananas and peaches
- Coffee
- Tea
- Pudding (current favorite)
- Jello (or any other flavored gelatin
- Flavored milk
- Yogurt
- Applesauce
- Vegetable juice
- Fruit cocktail syrup (you can put the fruits themselves in too).
And lastly, the funniest ice pop recipe I've seen on the internets.

Quote:
WATER – plain water is way fun to freeze. Every kid I know likes plain ice pops, and we need lots of water to stay healthy. Also, if you’re having a summer picnic, you can make plain water pops with beautiful tiny edible flowers, flower petals, small whole berries, or whole herb leaves in them. Stick them in a bucket of cubed ice to serve and everyone will think you’re some sort of Martha Stewart genius. People will fawn over you for freezing water. No kidding.
