Musou Kakyou - 01

Well well. I thought it would never happen. A doujin anime based on Touhou. XD

The story begins with someone flinching The Hakurei Shrine's Offering Box in the dead of night. The next morning, Reimu and Suika are prepping for a feast that is to be held.

A while later, sending Suika on an errand, Reimu goes to the front and discovers her shrine's donation box is missing. Shocked and at a loss, Aya drops in and soon follows up with Marisa to her. While Reimu laments the loss of her box, Aya points out that she never actually receives any donations anyway. Reimu pushes this aside as a trivial detail and wants to find out who the culprit is at any cost. Marisa, on the other hand just wants to not get involved.

No. Freaking. Way.

At any rate, they depart for Scarlet Devil Mansion, as Reimu suspects Patchouli of stealing her box. At the mansion, Remilia and Sakuya are having a short conversation:- it seems that some of Sakuya's things have been going missing. Patchouli, busy reading up her books, gets "rudely interrupted", thanks to Reimu busting in and accusing her of stealing her precious donation box. Patchouli denies and wonders what Reimu is ranting about, and some book-tossing later, a battle ensues.

Super Reimu easily kicks her way through a brick wall

Magical spells and a bunch of talismans later, Reimu unleashes an "ULTIMATE ATTACK!!" and almost manages to mop the floor with Patchouli's face.

Fireworks: Made in Japan

Patchouli ducks behind a bookcase for cover when she is stopped by Sakuya, and Remilia intervenes. Remilia taunts Reimu a little, and it is revealed that Patchouli actually had a book stolen as well, and Sakuya, her tea things. As things stand as they are, Reimu decides that Patchouli is innocent... which effectively ends episode one with a cliffhanger.

My box = SRS BZNS

Firstly, while watching this anime, I had to keep reminding myself that this is an anime made by a doujin studio. No KyoAni wonderfulness here. However, one has to admit that these guys did a good job - a wonderful job, if you ask me. Animation quality wasn't top-class, but it wasn't bad either. Frankly, I'm amazed they also managed to rope in Nakahara Mai (Nagisa from CLANNAD) to voice Reimu. I found the combination perfect. For some reason, I also loved the OP of the anime - I found it catchy, and I demand an OST right this instant. The ED was also good. Story-wise, episode 1 to me was merely a plot opener - nothing is resolved at all, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. We get introduced to the characters, and get slammed right into a mystery at the beginning of this series.

By the way, thinking about episode 2? I suggest giving this a LONG, LONG, wait. Like maybe an episode every Comiket. =_=;

Watch it if:

+Curious about how an anime doujin would fare.

Avoid if:
Never heard, don't care for, could care less about Touhou.

My only problem with this, is that Patchy ran away after the short battle. Afraid even.
and that just isn't what I expected from someone like her, if anything she would keep fighting until interrupted.

All in all, this was great 4/5

The magic animation they used was really nice, although the character animation was quite strange, pretty good for Fan Made though...

The backgrounds look so good, comparable to/even better than professional anime. But the characters don't, and it takes a while to get used to it. >_<

I really like the relationship between the characters on both sides. It isn't something you can find in many other anime. (Well I don't read any Touhou doujins, I just play the games so it might be like that in doujins too.)

It is funny the way that Aya can be friendly with both sides, the way that they don't care so much that some people just invaded their mansion, the way Reimu talks to Patchy in a friendly manner etc. It feels like they are friends and enemies at the same time.
