Like many people, as I grew up I have received many nicknames in my life. None of which has affected me more than Debbie.

Almost 9 years ago my dad was still in the military. And like many other military families we moved around quite a bit. The last time was when we moved to Kentucky. I must admit, before moving here I had quite the skewed idea of what Kentucky was. I believed that I would be surrounded by incestuous people who only ate KFC. I learned that not everyone here is like that.

Before we were moving my mom made plans for us to stay at her friends house. I was quite excited to be staying there, my mom told me that her friend's daughter and I had many similar interest. Than came the problem. I knew pretty much exactly who I was gonna meet, but now currently best friend had a completely different idea of who I was.

The issue began with the fact that both of our mother's have engrish as a 2nd language. As my mom was describing me to her friend's daughter, she meant to say "I have a kid named David." What she actually said was "My kid name Debbie".

As we drove up to my mom's friends house. I was anxious to meet my first friend in Kentucky. I stared around her neighborhood. I looked at the grasses in their yard, and I was slightly disappointed. Bluegrass state my ass, the grass was green. This was not a good start for the relationship I would soon have for this state.
I walked up to the front door and knocked, my mom knowing that I was pretty excited let me go first.

As the door opened, a relatively short Blasian girl answered it. I knew right off the bat, this was her. This was my new friend. I began to introduce myself, "Hi, my name David." For awhile there we stood there transfixed and just staring at one another through the screen door. Till I was rudely shoved aside, "Move Debbie, I go bathroom." my mom shouted at me. I followed in after her. The girl stared at me and said "Hi Debbie. Want to play?"

For some reason hearing my name being pronounced Debbie by someone else other than my own mom really irritated me. I followed after her and we began to play with her digimon figurines, with no communication what so ever, she picked Lopmon and I picked up Terriermon. We stared at one another again, at that moment I knew we would become best friends. Than she ruined the moment. "Debbie blah blah" and "Hey Debbie want to blah blah" carried on and on all night. Debbie this, Debbie that. I would occasionally stare at any shiny surface just to make sure I didn't look like a girl.

"Debbie want to make snow cones?" she told me as she walked towards her mini household snow cone maker.

"Um...sure. Also my names David not Debbie." I said quietly, hoping that my correction doesn't off set her.

She stared at me for a bit. "Oh ok. What flavor do you want Debbie?"

How thick headed I thought. Her reaction clearly stated that she heard me. How dare she still call me Debbie. What nerve. I decided to stop bickering about this in my head, as I tend to put on a creepy grin when suppressing my anger, and I still wanted that snow cone. "Blueberry please" I replied.

Almost nine years later, and she still calls me Debbie. But I'm ok with that. Over this time span we've grown to be best friends. Some would even say we are twins. We do have the same birthday in fact. She's my blasian sister, and I'm her whasian brother. We're like an oreo cookie. Double stuffed with awesomeness.

*Author Note* ~ This blog a little different than what I have wrote in the past. As I was trying to think of what to write about, I came up with the idea of dedicating my next few entries to important people in my life. So hopefully the 7 readers that I have enjoy these.
