my dog

Posted 11-24-2009 at 08:37 PM by PedroRomero
well... my dog i've had him since i was about 10 and i'm 21 right now. anyway we used to keep really good care of him. he used to be always groomed and going to the vet etc when i was younger. however as i got older things changed.

he used to take heart worm medicine every month and washed regularly.

now for the past few years he has been neglected. he doesn't get washed much because he's really large and my dad is the best at controlling him. i'll help but it's hard to do with one person. he's a good dog in general but you know how some animals get about baths. he also needs a muzzle which my dad neglects to buy. he broke his paw when he was a puppy and now is apprehensive when people get near them to groom him.

also at one point he was infested by fleas. he NEVER had fleas when i was growing up. but he did have them really bad this year and his skin was flaking as well. and he had a rash on his underside. i gave him allergy medicine for the rash (it cleared up) and after lots of bothering we finally got rid of the fleas. it took me and my mom FOREVER to convince him to take action.

my dad used to buy my dog expensive flea medicine but now my dad complains about the dog and related expenses. he gets mad when me and my mom mention something the dog needs. his reply is "why don't you do it?"

well i would. but i'm always broke and never have money because I help pay bills in the house and i barely work. i work very little and i'm a full time university student. all of my money goes to bills and food.

i understand that he says he is broke but at the same time i feel my dad is complaining all of the time about every single thing.

i just feel so bad because my dog has worms. I know he has worms but i am afraid to say anything because I know my dad will be mad and say the same thing he said about the skin.

i bought my dog oatmeal scrubs and medicine from the pet store for the skin and it worked. but worms is something that they need a vet to diagnose right?

every time i say something about the dog he always says "there's always something wrong. you always saying something"

i can't help that i'm concerned. it hurts me to see that my dog is suffering and i can't do anything about it. What am I supposed to do about his worms? I cannot afford him medicine. I even have some debt of my own. I can hope to fall into money but even then I don't know how much it costs to get a dog a check up. I heard it's quite pricey especially since dogs don't have insurance.

what do I do? I don't want to see him like this anymore. He's had the worms for months now! and now his skin is flaking again too. i realize he's old but that doesn't mean i want him to fall apart.

Eh, don't know what to say mate

My dogs getting old too, she's slowing down alot. Partly because she had a tumor right around the area of where her leg connects to her chest, and she was weird ever since she got it removed.

Despite the fact that she decides to piss in my room every other day when I'm not around, she's still really nice and calms me down whenever I get frustrated with something :/

My dads the same way with our dog, so I'm sure it's just a father thing <.<

Best of luck to you man, I hate seeing or hearing about family pets in pain ~_~

I dunno if it would work for you (and because I always do things very differently from "normal" people), but when my dog (a puppy back then) had fleas, I skipped/skimped on meals and walked instead of using public transportation to save up. Wasn't a good experience but I managed to save up quite a bit. But then my dad saw realized this and gave in. He bought everything; from medicine to medicated collar to a giant sack of dog kibble.

Maybe if you show how serious you are, or at the very least guilt trip him on how much you're willing to sacrifice, the parental complex will kick in and eventually give in.

Oh, and I never asked my dad to buy anything. I understood that it was my decision to keep my pet and it was my responsibility to take care of him. It just came out when he noticed me walking home carrying a 15kg bag uphill~

@7hatguy - thanks. yeah i don't wanna think of him not being here and if him being in bad health will hasten that then i wanna do everything to help!

@tori- guilt tripping is actually how me and my mom got him to fix the flea problem the first time. but i feel like i'm asking too much by pushing the thing with the worms too.

yeah i already take public trans everywhere. i usually pack a lunch to school because it's cheaper as well. i just buy a soda though. so i guess i can just bring a drink from home instead from now on in a bottle.

i didn't ask for my dog. actually my dad didn't ask anyone if he could get a dog. my aunt and cousins had him first and asked my dad to train him but after we trained him we kept himm.

but yeah i will take your advice tori. i will wash him by myself tomorrow with oatmeal and everything since this is my first time having no school or work in months.

Svenny, you should call around and look for a Discount Vet. They aren't shady or anything, they're just meant for people who can't afford expensive vet bills. A rabies shot at a discount vet is about $5, whereas a normal one is $25. I'm sure you could get an appointment and some dewormer for a reasonable price.

I personally have mine on the pet wellness plan they have at the Banfield clinics in Petsmart. It's about $21 a month, but since I only have to buy him a 6lb bag of kibble every two months, he's not a huge expense to take care of, that and $21 is like...less than a dollar every day. I know that's still a lot when you're broke (believe me I know) but his shots and neutering and everything would have cost me over 1k at this point, and I've only had to pay $300 or so, and he was VERY sick when I first got him.

If I were there I'd lend a hand in giving him a bath :P Doggies are so cute.
