You know what I really, really hate?

MMORPGs where KSing is even a potential problem. I mean, last time I checked, one of the big things about the MMO genre in general was that you got to play with other people. So why aren't games designed to encourage cooperation instead of "cc plz"?

I mean honestly, I know you gotta have solo options for those times when people just feel like making some progress without having to deal with other people or when there's just not enough time to find a group, but I think if playing an MMO by yourself is the optimal choice as far as getting stuff done, something is wrong with the basic design of the game.

in other news, if you haven't seen it ... there's a http://www.steparu.com now. Pretty interesting place to watch if you're interested in the latest Korean MMOs, i.e. stuff we'll [probably] never see in English.

  1. There are some MMOs (such as ones that don't have instanced raids) where I think to myself, "Wow, my gameplay would be a lot more fun if a huge chunk of the playerbase didn't exist, and it isn't even that playerbase's fault!"

It's stupid, because an MMO should be encouraged to GROW. Instead, you dread the overcrowding as the sparse few amount of raid bosses and rare monsters in the game get more and more overly camped as more players come into the game. Which of course leads to things like kill-stealing and the like.

I don't understand this design philosophy. Don't companies want a BIGGER playerbase? Then why design the game in a way that makes it get worse as the playerbase gets bigger?
