My Happy 19th ^_^

Posted 06-05-2012 at 01:35 AM by kmelfina
Er June 2 as passed away.. but regardless. Just another year!

I'm in California, Encino so... yeah spending time on interwebz and library (only books on sexuality since I still can't get hormones out). If anyone remembers Alex from previous blogs... yeah I recently interacted with him. He thought I got rid of my virginity xD Guess I'll be the butt of every 'virgin sacrifice' joke. I head back to VA on the 25th of July so there's a 2-3 week time frame where I can see him 'physically'. *sighs* +2 years of planning and... yeah I really want to get this 'over with'.

Oh, I played in the Casino at chumash. Only won $30 at best from a machine (Hell I only won money from asian-themed electron slots.) Calculating money I won/lost, I'm now $4 richer! Then had a spending spree with pricey items so I had to limit what I could buy... good quality and a price I wouldn't lost an arm or leg. Pucca characters keychain for my room-mate last year and his girlfriend (if they're still together), gold neko bell keychain for my ***-hag that rates guys with me as they pass by no matter how much we disagree 99.99% of the time, a shiny cross ornament for my aunt, socks for dad and musical note theme socks for a friend that's in Saudi at the moment xD... up to $40 but oh well.

Still wondering about my major, first it was Education with minor in math/economics... and then mathematics wondering what the heck I could do with that lol. Help the air force, architecture, accounting for businesses finances... urgh these decisions. Or just stick to the "Teach kids at old high school and love it".

A Smith College grad I spoke to today said you can do so much with a math major, depending on how much you are able to sell yourself. She's a friend of mine and I mentioned a possible math major. Some girls from '11 are already working with big firms/etc/whatever as number people.

You really have to play up how well you can work on figures. If you're good at number crunching, every business needs people who can just crunch numbers. If you minor in something, you can specialize in being able to number crunch in that area. I don't even think you really have to 100% know what the numbers mean. Like, you don't have to be an economist for being the numbers guy for a smaller firm. You just have to understand, and be willing to learn/pick up whatever you have to learn.

The only limitation on (most) majors is the person holding the diploma/whatever.

    Everything needs numbers.
With a large background in mathematics, you can do anything from rocket science to risk analysis (like Zachary Quinto's character in the wonderful movie, Margin Call). As long as you can put names to the graph and tell them what's going on, you can pass that information on to people who can figure out what needs to be done.

That's one of the main reasons I'm taking out a minor in Mathematics while I'm working on this Engineering major. If all else fails, I know I'll have a good understanding and grasp on mathematics to have a ton of doors open for me career-wise. It also doesn't hurt just to know more math, in my opinion.

And don't corner yourself into a "let's just be a teacher" kind of deal. It's a good field and all, and it'd be great if someone can help push mathematics into the newer generations but at the same time would you really want to do that for your entire career? I know lots of my old teachers and professors had other jobs before they ended up as a teacher. Some have worked in their major field for a good 15-20 years before getting their teaching degree for high school. Or if you go the college route, teach after you retire even.
