Figuring things out and ... whatever

Wow, what a dumb adventure I've been on when it comes to computers.
First off, my XP on my desktop died, just a week after I got my netbook- and my optical drive decided to commit suicide. So my netbook had to take over, and I bought one of them dirt-cheap but decently-powered desktops from Wal Mart for $300. And it comes with Windows 7 ultimate! (not that I care.) Problem is, this desktop shows up only with VGA-out (boo!) and its only expansion port is an x1 variety kind of deal. So I had to find a video card to do DVI and do it cheaply. If you're in the same boat I am, you know it's not done cheap. I also had Miyu as a guide in this regard, if you've been around /ggFTW you'll know she's our resident hardware/software guru and a great help. Well, I eventually found a card for $25, but I had to also special-order a low-profile bracket as well as an adapter to DVI for extra cost which took an entire month to do. During that time I brute-forced a method to re-install XP on my old desktop via USB. After hours of failures and what-have-you, it installed! Anyway, after a few days of that, my final parts for my new computer arrived, and now I have two workable desktops. I'll keep the new one in reserve.
