Labels and Made-Up Words

Posted 10-26-2009 at 10:10 PM by Ethane
I'm no fan of arbitrarily labeling people, and by that I mean completely obvious characteristics. Now descriptive and pertinent labels I like. If a person is a saint, a samaritan, a smartass or just a complete idiot, I'd like to know. This lets me know if I ever want to deal with this person or not. Subjective, sure, but for the most part it works -- if everyone says that a certain person a complete basket case or an ambulatory drama station on two legs, I will do my best to avoid them.

That said, humanity as a whole loves labels. We have labels for ethnicity, race, sexuality, religion, you name it. Totally unimportant stuff for a rational person to care about, but people do.

What about the completely average, every day, run of the mill Jane and Joe? Oh yeah, you better believe it, they have a label too. This is where it gets hilarious.

In the free world (I can't speak for the DPRK) the average human is a heterosexual who will end up dating or marrying someone of the opposite gender. I'm just pointing out a simple fact and not stating anything critical about anyone else outside this average, but those of you I'm particularly targeting with this essay will get all butthurt and offended anyway.

Two words I've recently learned that are being thrown about with alarming regularity are "heteronormative" and "cisgendered". Here's the rough definitions: "heteronormative" is exactly as it sounds, it's the practice of opposite genders attracting. "Cisgendered" means a comfort or acceptance of the gender one was assigned in the womb.

Okay, yeah, so what's the big deal? They're just words, right? Yeah, they're just words, but here's the funny thing: Some people are throwing them around like an insult. ...don't ask me, I have no idea.

Remember the controversy surrounding the game, "Fat Princess"? You might remember some folks getting up in arms about it, specifically bloggers. One blogger, who was more vocal than the rest, kept reminding the trolls who kept attacking her comments section that they were nothing more than cisgendered heteronorms. Take that, jerks!

I've seen this talked about on other forums and blogs as well, and people drop this label -- sometimes with a false or forced pity for whoever receives it. It really sounds like some of these folks use this label as a way to boost their own self-esteem for not being one of those depressing "norms". This isn't an uncommon thing throughout history, but it's certainly one of the silliest examples.

I mean, think about it. "They called me cisgendered! They called me heteronormative! I have no idea what that means but I'm mad as hell!"

"It means you're a straight male who only dates women."

".....oh"
