I've wanted to post about music for a couple of days now; it's just been a matter of me not being lazy and actually posting. As you may recall, I made a post last week about video game music. Well now I shall discuss not-video-game music.

Now, my loose grasp on modern music genres only tells me a few things: If it's got heavily distorted guitars and lots of bass drum, it's metal. If it has no real instruments and a heavy beat, it's techno. If it's rock and was released within the past few years it's either "alternative" or "indie", and if it contains people talking rather than singing, it's crap. So it's tough to specify what sorts of music I like. I guess I could say that I do like techno/dance-style music, and I like rock in general. But then again, that's too general. Argh!

Alright, a list-ish globin of some artists will have to do. I'm not going to put them in any particular order, my tired brain doesn't feel like thinking quite that much right now.

List follows:

Rush
Let me just put it out there that Rush is one of my all-time favorite bands ever. Anyone who knows me in person (I try to stay away from saying 'IRL' because, as far as I'm concerned, the Internet is real life) coud tell you that I like Rush because that's 75% of what I talk about when I'm discussing music. There's just so much about their music that I find awesome. First off, they're not afraid to mess with awkward time signatures. As an example, take a listen to this:

The time signature in that song alternates between 6/8, 7/8, and 4/4. I have great respect for that drummer.

And here's another thing: Their lyrical content is completely suited to someone as geeky as I am. For example, Red Barchetta.
For those who don't feel like listening, it's a song about a guy who lives in a place/time where cars are illegal, and goes out for a drive just to be chased around by hovercraft. How awesome is that? ALSO, I love Rush for their endurance. If you know anything about Rush, you probably know that they have several songs that clock in at over ten minutes, some nearing 20. If you feel like spending plenty of time at your computer, have a gander:
And finally, this:

Yeah, I love this band. But that's all I'll say about them for now.

They Might Be Giants
Known to some as 'the band with two Johns', known to most as 'that band that makes no freaking sense whatsoever'. Yeah, their songs, for the most part, are utter nonsense. That's kind of part of the charm. As an example, watch this:

Oh yeah, their videos are batshit insane as well. Should've warned you about that I guess. Oh well. Of course, some of their songs actually do have somewhat of a 'meaning' to them, for instance:

If you think about it hard enough, you'll realize that this song is about the stupidity of joining fads. Of course, the complete lack of meaning in a lot of their songs doesn't stop people from trying to figure them out. The band has a wiki that contains song info, lyrics, and "interpretations". Choose any one of their less-sane songs, and the interpretations can get pretty wacky. It's good for amusement sometimes.

I've weirded myself out enough for now. Enough They Might Be Giants, on to

BT
I said that I like techno, right? Yeah, I did. This guy is pretty cool. The first time I heard of him was watching 7hatGuy play a song by him in Audiosurf, from the Need For Speed Underground soundtrack:

Alright, so I implied earlier that I don't like rap. I kind of lied; I do like some rap. Anything that appears in BT's music is included in that "some". Not only does BT do high-energy tracks like that one, though, he's also got some extremely chill music. Example:

So yeah, he's got a broad spectrum. If you want to hear more, just look him up on YouTube; he's pretty easy to find.

That's all that I'm going to elaborate on, but I do have a bunch of other "favorite" bands:
  • The Beatles
  • Skillet
  • Relient K
  • Rise Against
  • Stemage/Metroid Metal (Okay, kind of crosses over with games there)
  • Bomfunk MC's
  • MC Frontalot

More or less, I'd consider myself a pretty eclectic guy.
