Default Hair Dyes !

Post your hair pictures and/or share experiences here.

I want to dye my virgin black hair with a "permanent" hair dye into hair like IU's or Miss A's Suzy's, they have light brown, warm hair. I tried dying it with L'oreal's Dark Golden Brown and my hair still looks black so I'm guessing I might either have to (1) visit a professional salon or (2) go the cheap way and bleach then dye my hair. Any tips as to method & shade? (: Thank ya.

I always insist on having a professional dye your hair. It may be cheaper to do it yourself, but you have to know what you're doing. I've had my friend do mine before and broke out really bad and had a few burns from it(left marks for a few months), and whenever I get it professionally done (2 times a year at least, sometimes 3) I never have any problems. Be ready for your scalp to be extremely itchy D: that's the worst part.

as for pictures Id have to get from my phone, but I've dyed my hair like every color in the rainbow. D:
it's been blue/green, it's been red, orange. Pink, purple..so on.
Brand I always stick with is manic panic. They have so many colors to choose from and they last a long time with the right shampoos. :3

But since you want brown, I'd suggest like...garnier? I think it is? I used to use that hair dye(blacks, browns, dark reds) before i started getting into brighter dyes.

Spoiler!

For the funky colours (green, blue and purple) I had my hair bleached at a salon, and then added the other dye at home with the help of family/friends. Streaks were also from the salon.

The most current (brown) was also done at a salon. My hair is actually very very dark, so it's difficult to dye I guess. Well, it takes a long time, lol. I don't want it to come out blotchy, so I prefer paying and getting it done by someone.

I don't know if you guys have it there, but I dye my hair using Liese Bubble Hair Dye. Both times turned out fine. It's super easy to use, since it's like using shampoo.

I had the same problem as you did, so I just left the dye on longer than the suggested 20/40 minutes and used a brighter shade of brown.

I'll try out the foam and see how that works! Did you have virgin black hair too? It's so hard to lighten. But like others^ recommended, I might just get it done at a salon. HOPING oops, HOPEING it's under 50 dollars. ;___; *poor college student*

For me, hair dye + cut is about $70 CAD, but the people I go to are really nice. They've had to put like 3 coats on my hair, lol. Super thick hair >_>; good thing it isn't really long anymore, lol.

Yeah, I had really really black hair that was thick. x.x

;_; It was virgin black hair and it was so difficult to lighten. Like Yume, I've got thick hair too XD. The rates are around the same here too, around 70+ for a cut and dye.

Mines usually around 60$, it all depends on the length and where you go. It may be cheaper if you go to local salons, rather than the chains. >_>

My hair is about down to my shoulders.

If you want to go for a medium/natural brown, I suggest using an Asian brand called Palty -- it's sold only in Asian markets (your local Chinatown probably has it) but I've used it once and it's pretty effective. I dye my hair VERY often (like once every month/2 months) so I don't have many consistent pictures between my virgin black hair (many years ago) and the color I have now (which is ash dark brown/black). My hair pretty much went through the entire spectrum between black and medium light brown lol.

Here's a picture of the lightest my hair's ever been (Feb 2010):

When I was younger, I used L'Oreal. You can usually see in the packets samples of the turn-out depending on the darkness of your hair, so you wouldn't be surprised. It hasn't damaged my hair, and it makes my hair shiny.

Now I just go to the salon. It's always better to have it done professionally, but you have to choose the dye brand yourself. I still request for L'Oreal or Kerastase when I get it professionally colored. (I don't get it colored anymore... I like my hair black.)

+1 for Palty. I didn't want to bleach my hair and I'm a poor Uni student, too so I went for the box.

Hi Kyouria, I have dyed my hair a couple times at home with my friends, even though, I had black asian hair back then.

First thing we had always done, was bleaching with a really bright hair colour (peroxide blonde or so..). We waited about 2 hours (as needed), washed it off and applied our desired hair colour. I chose L'OREAL Récital Préférence (5.54) and came it out like this:
Spoiler!

It looked kinda different from how I expected it but I'm satisfied. You know, dark hair will never actually come out 100% like the package. As for me, I have to buy hair dyes that is always a little brigther than I actually want it, because it always turns out darker.

My hair colour is currently red/brown though.

And I have to add, I've never dyed my hair at a hair salon but my friend did and the result isn't really better than dying at home and it have cost her 70 bucks more. I have no idea if the hair salon she went to, was unprofessional or not but I stay with the initiative dying at home. I hate to say this but I've got better things to spend 80 bucks on than that.

Oh and I really suggest you to care your hair (is that the word, you use? lol..) after dying, you may want to keep the glance for a long time.

Hm well from what i know about doing it yourself(not very accurate as i've only watched it happen at my house) is if you're doing bleach way you have to rub the bleach into desired area, wrap with foil to keep the bleach from moving around, wait for bleached hair to be as "blonde" as you need [varies depending on how dark your hair is and how dark of color you're dying it], wash it out, apply color dye, foil again, sit for however long box says, maybe longer i forget lol, wash that out in bathtub/sink and you should be set. /lolol i doubt this helped, but oh well.

I've been thinking of dying part of my hair as well, anyone got some suggestions for a long black haired asian guy? /note: its long for a guy anyway, back ends at bottom of neck.

^ Brown, hurr hurr.

There are times when you use tin foil, sometimes not. o: From what I have experienced myself, tinfoil is for streaks (so the colour doesn't go everywhere), but when I had all my hair dyed, they wrapped my head up in saran wrap, lol, but they didn't for my cousin, oddly.

Wow, thanks everyone for sharing your experiences! ^^
Your guys' hair looks so pretty and gorgeous<3 !

I might try out the Palty dye. If that fails, then I'll turn to a professional salon for help. Trying to save money, haha.. just hope my hair won't turn brittle with this because it has added bleach (as mentioned above).

Which do you think would come out similar-ist to IU's brown hair?

I'm thinking Milk Tea Brown or Caramel Brown? ^^;; Advice appreciated; again, this is on virgin black hair with MAYBE a tint of dark golden brown (can't tell at all, but its chemicals are probably still in my hair)

Thanks again, xoxo

I have no idea what hair colour whomever is sporting now.
Just a keep the dye on for much longer than expected stated since I'm guessing we're pretty much the same.
I used Palty Men on my first try and nothing much happened even though I left it for the prescribed 40 minutes. ;_;.

Which one did you like? She had it darker at some point...

If your hair is really dark and thick like mine, then it'll take a while to get it really light like the first picture.

I suggest Caramel Brown or Bitter Cappuchino, but then again, I don't know what you look like. Just don't dye your hair lighter than you skin tone.

Caramel Brown seems like a good choice

when I dyed with Palty I used Bitter Cappucino -- my hair was already kinda darkish-medium brown so the dye didn't make a huge difference in color (but it wasn't supposed to since I was aiming for a more ashy-medium brown, which I DID get)

#1, I think
Spoiler!

From her DREAM HIGH days! (:

I might go for Caramel Brown because it might come out darker than on the box (like Ascherit recommend too). It is darker than my skin tone, I think.

Thank you all for the replies~

Do you know if there' an order rest/root hair recommended? Are the shades any different if you put it in for longer or the order is different?
