Default Workout help.

Well, I'm sick and tired of using these stress balls because they help relieve zero stress whatsoever. Summer is coming up and I could get in shape. I'm not fat but I'm not in shape either lol. I hear exercising is a great stress reliever which I really need so I figure kill like a hundred birds with one stone, but one problem, I have no real knowledge about working out.

I can't go to the gym since money's tight but my friend's apartment complex has a mini-gym so I could work out there. I have some 15 lb. dumbbells and some ankle weights and I hear free weights are better than machines, is this true?

No clue what exercises I should do but I don't want to go like super buff, 18 pack person. Just want to lose some weight, tighten up my chest/arms/back, and some stamina.

Also, about diet, what should I stay away from and what should I eat? I've basically cut soda out of my life (check the food section) and have moved to water. I rarely eat junk food but fast food is a staple in my family, what's the healthiest things to get when I do go out.

Help pls.

Eh brigs I wouldn't call myself an expert in this field but my gym class has some weight lifting in it so...(think about poor little susan trying to lift weights...*cries*)

Weights are better than machines in terms of using your stability muscles. If you use a machine you are in a fixed position so there's no stability muscle use there. But I don't see anything wrong with using a machine really, it just depends on what you want to do.

If you are going to do stuff like bicep curls, chest press, and so on, make sure you can do them consecutively to 12 or really close. If you do less (like 5) it's more strength training, then actually working out your muscles (endurance).

Briggs, To lose the weight and get in shape the best thing to do is cardio.

Keep in mind it takes 15mins for your body to start burning calories and fat.

You can:
Run
Crunches
Push ups
ect.. (You never have to leave home, Well unless you run)

Running; its easy, no cost, you can do it anywhere, its healthy, energises your body and is good for your lungs, blood pressure etc. It makes you feel better, and if you're stressed it's a release.
Swimming; fuelling your energy levels, challenging your stamina. Toning your body.
Cycling; Working on your muscles, it's enjoyable, much like the above.
Sit ups; Toning your body, helping you get to the shape that you feel is better for you.

You don't need to exercise excessively either. Find an activity or a sport and just fit it into your daily routine + Enjoy it.

If you live on a lot of fast food then I'm going to recommend Sub Way~ Fast food should only be ate once a month at the very very most. Most nutritionists say never, even. XD Lots of granola and fruit. Try to stay away from processed foods. Eat lots of green foods. V8 doesn't count; it's packed with sodium.

For exercising, keep that heart pumping. As Sandrie said, it's better to not use a machine but a machine is definitely good still!

Also, remember to do stretches and breathe. I can't tell you how many times that when I exercise, I get so into it and focused that sometimes I forget to breathe. It'll wear you out very quickly; your muscles need oxygen in order to lactate properly. Stretches are very very important (especially when you're getting used to exercising again or even the first time) because it'll ruin your muscle buildup and even make exercising way more painful if you don't.

Drink lots and lots and lots of water. Water helps keep your muscles working fluidly, keeps your body hydrated, gives you good, clean perspiration and makes you pee a whole lot! Peeing a lot is a great thing; you should drink a gallon of water a day. This is especially important for you since you have drank so much Dr. Pepper. :P All that water will help flush out your kidneys, filter out your body/urinary track, and possibly help break up small kidney stones that you may have developed from all that soda. (Kidney stones are NO fun)

Couch to 5k - C25K Running Program

Running is a great way to improve stamina, but if you're never run before, you shouldn't overdo it. The C25k (Couch to 5k) is designed specifically for people who want to go from no activity to being able to actually jog/run. I do this one myself, though my joints are kinda bad (vitamins help that though, my legs have been getting better).

Also, I'd really recommend biking. Not only do you get exercise, but it's also really really fun. Especially if you have a buddy to bike with you.

When summer comes, I would suggest swimming, for the same reason as biking. Also, it puts less strain on your muscles and joints.

Actually, this pretty helpful for me as well!

I am in the same predicament, and I can't wait to implement these activities in my daily routine!

I think one of the most important thing about working out is doing it on a continuous basis.

During Spring Break ( a week ago), I actually did ice1cube's work out routine (youtube him) and I've been doing it once every 3 days or so.

I remember after the first day, I was sore for 3 days, and couldn't move at all. But now that I've been doing it routinely, it's really not that bad, and I've been feeling a LOT healthier!

Just remember not to stop, or it will be really hard to get back to working out again :X ;;

My leg is injured so I can't start yet but I do plan on doing it every other day.

If your leg is injured then you should definitely look into swimming instead of running @_@
