Art/Graphic Resources and Tutorials + Image Copyrights
This thread is basically to set back the number of sticky topics we have here in the Graphics and Fanart section. So I'm going to post links to tutorials and base images, etc., that we have posted in this section.
COPYRIGHT NOTICE: Before you post any images, please ensure you have the proper copyright for posting it. If it's your work, naturally you have the copyright. If it's work done by another then you must ensure you ask their permission before posting (unless it's public domain media).
MyMMOGames.net cannot reasonably verify the copyright on every image posted on this site. We will, however, comply with any copyright violation notices that can be reasonably verified. So, if your images disappear and you don't know why, this is probably what happened.
To prevent the hotlinking trap accidents from happening again, I'm suggesting that all members, it's best to link the images via your own image album, or at least some other images hosting services, instead of direct hot linking.
- Note:- Certain website owners hates others to hotlinking his/her images from his/her site, due to usages of bandwidth [lol, bandwidth stealer[?]].
So, how do I post images here then???
I recommend these few free image hosting, to you guys to link your images to.
- First, register an account @ photobuclet.
- Once you got your album, just use the "Web URL" to direct save the images to your pb.
- Or, use "Choose File [My Computer] to upload your images to your album in pb.
- Then, just copy the "IMG Code" and paste it here.
Imageshack/tinypic:-
Quote:
- Just use the upload function
- Copy the link and paste it here.
It's recommended that you guys should use the "Preview Post" button to preview your images/posts first before clicking on "Submit" button.
All your co-operations are greatly appreciated. Just PM me if you still have problems!
Hello people ~
So... um, you can call me Haiko.
I was looking around here, the art section, and I noticed there are few tutorials or resources for the MMOGers to look at, and I think Glarbage's thread is kind of outdated. I dunno if he has much free time, but I do... so I thought of making a thread that'd have all that!
If you have any tutorials (if they aren't yours, please credit the owner), want to share your knowledge, want to learn, or just want to get some new stuff, here you go.
Just post one tutorial per post and I'll organize them all up here, in the first post. If you wish to contribute, just go ahead and start the MADNESS... I mean... er... ah, whatever.
Resources
So, well, since I'm just starting the thread, I'll put the stuff I know. If you with to contribute, please feel free to post it too and I'll be glad to add it here! :3
<Daneh> Haiko ;_;
<Daneh> post somewhere that I can render for noobs too
Ignore the noobs part, it's just Dani fdksjhf
Anyway, she asked me to post here that she can help people with renders, if they find an image that isn't rendered (i.e. black background, forest, etc.), just PM her or talk to her on IRC.
Yes, I know there is a graphics resource thread already, but it feels like it aims more towards signature graphic kind of things rather then art involved with a pencil and pen, or a tablet, even. If this still falls under the same category as the other thread, then just merge it with it or something.
Oh and a sticky would be cool. 8D *dies*
Art Resource Thread
For anatomy tips, art resources, and more for your convenience.
I'll try to get as many things as I can to help people out, from free graphics software and products you may consider buying if you really want to spend the money, as well as anatomy references and tips.
This is a Work in Progress! In other words I'm not done yet.
If you find this useful rep me or something. 8D *dies*

Freeware Graphics programs
ArtRage 2 There is a starter version and a full version, which can be purchased for 25$. Of course, the starter version is free.
http://home.cwru.edu/~nxl25/downloads/opencanvas.exe Direct download link to Open Canvas 1, freeware. There's a networking feature that allows up to 3 people to draw on a canvas at once. It may be hard to use at first, so I'll post a tutorial for it further down.
portalgraphics.net aint software openCanvas
Any current version of open canvas will work here. It costs around $57 USD or so. I used to use it a year or so ago, and I didn't really like its user interface, however getting past that its a pretty nifty program.
Painter X - Digital Painting
Corel Painter, I've never really used it, but I heard its also a very good program for digital painting. It's price stands at $359.00. If you're cheap like me, I'd rather get Open Canvas, or...
SYSTEMAX Software Development - PaintTool SAI
Definitely my favourite graphics program, and I'm very happy with it. It's very small and hardly takes up memory (it takes up even less then OpenCanvas!). The japanese-english patch from the official site has some weird typos in it, so I suggest getting the unofficial patch. Paint tool SAI in English The program costs around $50 USD, and it's worth every penny in my honest opinion.
Manga Studio Debut
There are two versions of Manga Studio; Debut and EX. Debut is a smaller version of the program, aimed more towards amateurs and hobbyists and doesn't have all the features EX has. The Debut version of the program costs $50 USD. EX is more for professionals and has way more features, such as rendering 3-D models. The EX version costs around $300 USD. Honestly I'm pretty sure most people around here would only use the Debut version, since it pretty much has all the things you need.
WAIT! Wry no Photoshop!?
Because Photoshop is more of a photo manipulation and graphics editing program rather then one for digital painting in my honest opinion. Most likely, all the programs listed before Photoshop most likely have a better sensitivity to tablets anyways. However, photoshop can come in handy for certain things, such as effects that you may be lazy with and will just cheat with in Photoshop, but really, the current version (CS4) is $1000 USD. If you're just going to use it for small touch ups, just get gimp or something.
And no, I will not post links and such to pirating sites. 8|
More programs to be added in time.
Anatomy references and other useful things Note that these sites may possibly have nudity or icky muscle models on them. You have been warned, and don't blame me if you see things you don't want to see.
Since I will now talk myself, listen up, lawl. For this, I suggest you have a photo manipulation program... and of course, a scanner. Normally I don't draw on paper, but mainly entirely on the computer, so yeah. My tips might not be the greatest, but it gets the job done. Whenever you scan a picture, always have a resolution greater then 200dpi. I usually use like, 500dpi. Take the scanned picture in to a photo manipulation program, such as Photoshop or Gimp.
If its just lineart/sketch...
Resize the picture if you really wish to, then...
In Photoshop
Spoiler!
I am going to use this picture.
Open up your picture, and then go to Image -> Adjustments -> Levels.
That small window will pop up. If you drag the white arrow left, the image will lean more to a white colour.
If you drag the grey arrow left your picture will get the same effect as with the white arrow. If you drag it right it will have the same effect as the black arrow.
If you drag the black arrow right your dark areas on the picture will get darker.
Make it lighter or darker as you please.
Erase the mistakes with a lowered opacity eraser, if you make a mistake on a line you wish to keep, just go over it with the burn too.
Viola.

I am going to use this (FAIL) picture that I doodled in class when half asleep. its not the greatest I know. ;_; Go to the top bar > Colours > Levels This window will pop up. If you drag the white arrow left, the image will lean more to a white colour.

Only mess with levels if your sketches are really light and hard to see, or vice versa. Sometimes your sketches are fine without messing with levels.
But if you are doing a Coloured sketch... Then you don't really want to mess with Levels... and well, scanners always devour colours.
In Photoshop
Spoiler!
I am going to use this fail marker picture.
Scanners tend to make colours in a picture really dull afterwards, so we want to try to restore those colours... somewhat. So far all I really do is go to Image > Adjustments > Auto Color and that does the job.
Autocolor brings out the colours a bit more compared to when the picture was simply scanned... If there's a better way to do this, then PM me about it!
In Gimp
Spoiler!
Same marker picture as the photoshop part.
Go to Colours > Auto > Color Enchance. You may notice that the colours are a bit too saturated. Go to Edit > Fade Colour Enhance and a box like this will appear.
Lower the opacity to whatever you think would look good. The modes box just changes the look of the picture. I would go with the multiply mode, it just looks better then simply replacing the colour to me orz
Its too low opacity wise Q_Q IT LOOKS JUST LIKE THE PICTURE BEFORE DOING ANYTHING WAT
Lineart tips and methods For both mouse users and tablet users
If you think you can't do anything digital on a computer just because you use a mouse, smack yourself right now. In reality, tablets just make our lives easier and enable pressure sensitivity. This may lead to them having cleaner lineart and such. However with enough practice, you can have clean lineart with a mouse too. Before I got my Graphire 3 tablet back in August 2006, I used a mouse since my tablet before that broke (lolol).
Here's a picture I did with a mouse back in June 2006. lolol old picture ITS SO OLD IT MAKES MY EYES BLEED
Anyways see how clean the lineart is? Just because you use a mouse doesn't mean you can't get lines like that! And besides... You don't have to do your lines freehand, there are ways to get around that.
Welcome to the simply FABULOUS PEN TOOL/BEZIER TOOL.
This part of the tutorial (for now) leans towards Oekaki programs ( PaintBBS, OekakiBBS, Shi Painter, Shi Painter Pro) and Photoshop. But wait... you haven't heard of an oekaki? Here's a definition.
An online "board" where people can draw, via a java paint applet, pictures (usually in the style of anime) and can have comments posted by other users, so as to have their artwork thoughtfully critiqued. Fun to do if you go to a good board.
The oekaki programs aren't as advanced as Digital Painting programs you would normally install/pay for/ect, but they're a good, easy to use, free alternative. From 2004 all the way to early 2007, I stayed on an oekaki board. The community at the one I stayed at was good, but then everything exploded and everyone left. Oekakis are only really enjoyable with friends and other people you can interact with... Dead oekakis are... well... Not the greatest.
If you're lazy like me, you probably don't bother making custom headers and accents for your layouts. (Well, except for my profile; I was actually in possession of "free time" once upon a time.)
The simplest way to spice up a drab layout is, of course, plastering on a patterned background and set block colors on the rest of the customization options based on the background image's palette. Whether your background looks like your granny's kitchen wallpaper or a gorgeous damask washover decides whether your blog/profile turns out to be fab or (God forbid) drab.
NOTE: Some of these come in Photoshop patterns, like my favorite stripe set. The less lazy more advanced user could easily slap this on a basic 100x100 repeatable image with any color. I suggest using some gradient for prettier effects.
Now you have no excuse not to pretty-fy your layouts hurhurhur...
Most of need a good picture to start with when making sigs, avatars, layouts, or whatever. Of course, you have to perform some voodoo photo manipulation, else the die-hard art crowd will jump on your back. Photo manipulation, I've come to learn, takes considerable experimentation. Gosh, it's tedious!
Fortunately, you can achieve the same result from hours as trying out overlays/filters/color balance adjustments by using ACTIONS (aka Pro Effects In One Click).

Yeah, I just saw that. ><' (I never notice sticky threads, lol, bad thing.)
Then I edited the first post. I dunno if Glarbage has free time, but I do, and such, I dunno. Maybe we just keep that other thread. :v
Edit: And I think one thread for all tutorials is kind of more organized... so the section won't have a load of pages and other threads dying because of it...
Also, people can ask questions and solve problems with tutorials here, maybe? x-x
It's just my opinion, though.
haiko you noob you forgot to link to my renders so people actually know if I'm good at rendering or not. D:
Anyways.
If you want to ask me to render something yet are unsure if i'm any good or not at rendering then here are two renders ( my 3rd and 4th renders ever to tell the truth 8D *shot* ) of mine. One was done today, the other one like... one or two days ago, lol.

I highly don't recommend getting stocks or any renders from deviantart. Most of the artists there will disagree with any of their pictures being used without their permission.
It's a RIP if the artist disagrees, but you use it anyways.
Haiko, I'm going to move all the informative stuff you've posted up to the first post, for easier navigation. (Not deleting any posts, just putting all the info up top lol)
EDIT: It's all up top now, in spoiler tags because it's massive text lol
