Default Photoshop help

I've been looking on google about how to draw a curved line in photoshop and it seems the easiest way is to use the pen tool...however when I try to make a curved line like in the videos I watch it gets filled in with color instead of making a line.

Anyone know if there's a setting I have to turn on/off for this to work?

Top left corner, change from Shape mode to Path. (The square-looking icon) Based from my memory at least, I switched to cs6 a while ago and they have a drop down menu instead.

Yeah, what Kuda said. You're gonna want to set your pen tool like this:

As shown in the top left corner. Then, whenever you want to make the line, right click and hit "Stroke Line..." as shown in the other red box. From there, you'll probably want to have it set to "brush." Be aware that this is going to make it use the brush setting that your brush is currently set to, so my recommendation is to have your brush set as a round brush 3px to 5px, and with default brush settings on it.

Thanks guys~

I've run into another problem though. I'm trying to figure out how to add the glow effect like they did in this signature:

I figured out how to do it to circles, but not the lines that I draw with the pen tool. When I try to add the outer glow effect it doesn't (seem) to do anything.

EDIT: Nevermind I think I stumbled upon it lol. As long as you use the same brush that you've used an outer glow with before it applies it when you click stroke on the new lines with the pen~

Yeah, a glow effect like that specifically is going to be a combination of effects and blending settings. Nothing too complicated, to be sure. Glad you've got it figured out.
