I thought Fairy Tail wasn't part of Shonen JUMP
Anyway, it's true sometimes this happens but usually in Shonen JUMP mangas there is some logical explanation behind powerups.
Examples (that I can think of):
DBZ: training arcs (I can't remember what else)
Naruto: training arcs, new techniques, age maturing, kyuubi mode etc.
Bleach: training arcs, bankai, hollow powers
KHReborn: training arcs, ring upgrades, weapon upgrades
D. Gray-man: training arc(s?), weapon power up
Now lets look at Fairy Tail:
0 training mentioned
0 power ups/upgrades (with the small exception of Lucy's new keys and Natsu eating Etherion)
and I can't even count how many 'nakama power ups' have been in this manga.
My god page 15 of that chapter...
