The thing about 5cm/sec is that the first 1/3 of the movie was absolutely godlike, the second 1/3 of the move was so-so (feels way too irrelevant), and the last 1/3 was just absolutely horrible. The ending sucked too.

If you want a better romance, Honey and Clover is pretty up there.

Shinkai film is all about the high budget art and how much sadness he can cram in for each second of the film. The first part was definitely the best of the three, but I wouldn't pass off the other 2 segments as crap. I wouldn't entirely compare it to H&C either because 5cm just doesn't have the bitter-sweet storyline that H&C had.

Overall, 5cm had its great moments and great music, but just too melancholy and it didn't seem like it closed the story off well despite having only few characters.

Indeed, the animation was absolutely godlike. The romance in the first third was absolutely amazing, but the other 2 thirds just felt nothing to me. I didn't feel like anything was getting done, and the romance was just flat and nothing developed.

And the ending pissed me off. It wasn't sad for me, I just felt angry at the main character.

I don't know. Chasing after the girl instead of letting it go after so many years would have killed the melancholy mood Shinkai tried to create.

It's also kind of funny how his arts are so beautifully done compared to the days when he did Voices of Distant Stars all by himself.

Meh, I thought the anime was mediocre. Maybe it's cuz I didn't really feel anything for the characters.
The animation is superb no doubt.
I thought the ending was okay o.O. There was nothing the guy could do since the girl was already married. The girl knew this too, so that's why she didn't stop for the guy when the train was passing between them. Pretty sad.

It was one of his earlier works where he did it with his wife on a single apple computer.

He also did this little short monochrome story titled She and Her Cat. It's just one of those lesser known works that took me forever to find a download for

is there 3 parts like different paths or is it just based around the promise,sakura blossoms,tea,and remembering? Because i heard that there's like 3 different paths?? like him in 1990 him in 2003 ans stuff like that.

I'm not sure what you mean, but it's just a normal story that's divided in 3 parts in different times

it's one of the animes that makes you want to NOT watch other animes because you got the impression that everything else sucks x.x

I remember seeing 5 Centimeters per Second about 2 years ago I think. I saw it in the 35mm theater at Otakon which took place in Baltimore, Maryland. This is one of my favorite anime films, and I still watch it when I get a chance. I love the story, music, just everything, all of the elements had strong emotions. Love certainly does have a very strong effect on one's life and lifetime memories.

I certainly recommend the OST, it's full of amazing piano pieces. =D
