crew member Luffy ever wanted was a musician. Everyone else pitched in the crew members that were needed. They even haphazardly got a historian for the heck of it. Now that he has his musician, anyone is fair game.
On-topic: One Piece is probably one of the few traditional shounen that still keeps me giddy, in addition to Shaman King, Yu Yu Hakusho, Konjiki no Gash Bell, and (technically) Soul Eater. Ever since I became acquainted with this series, I've never been disinterested or disappointed. Oda's got a knack for this, and it's always a pleasure to read or watch.
One Piece is also one of the few anime that is not only consistent with the manga, but manages to capture and enhance the feel of the manga. There's very little filler in the anime that I don't like, and the manga always has humorous little side stories that let me know all of his side characters may be gone, but certainly not forgotten. The story is nothing deserving of a Pulitzer, but that's true for all shounen. However, the characters in their bizarre goodness are to die for. OP has always had a "Tall Tale" feel to it, making the lack of realism that much more effective and not making it difficult at all for me to suspend my disbelief.
Favorite character is Usopp the Immortal. He cannot
die, and he's taken hits that Luffy has never fathomed possible to take. His lies and tricks are hilarious, and the Straw Hat Crew would be sorely lacking without him. He's very undervalued amongst fans and underestimated in the OP universe, but I like him for that reason. I champion the cause of the underdog.
I'm catching up with the manga (I tend to fall out of reading because I hate the weekly wait and thus read in bulk), and everything I'm hearing about makes me want to catch up that much more. One of my favorite "anti"-villains (Mr. 2, aka Bon Clay) is back, so I definitely have picked up the pace just to see him teamed up with Luffy in one of the most epic Marine battles since Enies Lobby.
I'm especially giddy about the whole Hancock thing. I find it cute, hilarious and strangely appropriate, and I wanna see it for myself. Sadly, there's no way it's going to happen. Oda has made it very clear that in the end the Straw Hats only have a love for adventure.
So, I'll just have to put that in a little box along with my strong assertions for RobinxZoro.
But, one can still dream...
