Likely due to his information network or something. Even in the unlikely case that they knew each other from before somehow, Gai STILL has far better candidates to keep the virus, something that seems incredibly important. Would you trust your "friend" that's a wuss, who also ditched your comrade, to keep something so important safe?
...Especially when he's going to be running through a god damn battlefield? And the farthest stretch you can possibly take this is that Gai knows Shu has some special power or something, so he thinks it'll be ok trusting him with the virus.
Any way you put it, the conditions to make it believable that Gai would trust Shu with the virus over himself or any of his comrades requires bad writing. I'm just gonna enjoy this like R2 and Star Driver. Disregard plot, obtain lulz
