Disclaimer: I'm not trying to flame you or anything. This post is meant to show you how your argument "may be" incorrect, at least to me, whether you believe me or not.

You lost me. It seems like you are just arguing for the sake of an argument now, no offense. And I'm very sorry. Most of your points are irrelevant. My definition from the post above is: "By definition, harem includes all romance series where two girls are interested in one guy (or vice versa) and they can be one-way relationship. "

Things like Evangelion do not count because they are NOT romance-driven series. Same for gundam, Haruhi and the rest of the examples you tried to show.

You lost me because you strayed away from the original topic. Originally, and if I'm not mistaken, you were saying how if one guy ends up with one girl in the end, it is not a harem. This is the original topic. This is what your opening post is about. And you didn't talk about it in your most recent post. You stray off somewhere.

My professor always had said: "the moment you quote Wikipedia as a a primary source, you already failed half of your argument."

Its a long writing, Sorry making you guys read.

As to why, I think you already would have known

You can even check out all the lacking citation signs. The concept is still vaguely out there and still possible room for change.
This is a poor attempt to disprove my points. The term "harem" used in anime/manga and whatnot is an informal term. It is a slang. This "informal" definition does not exist in an actual dictionary. I chose the definition from a wiki because it is the most reliable out of all sources possible, at least to me.

You know how slangs are like. There can be multiple definitions because there is no "one" set-definition. It depends on the person's interpretation.

The bits about your professor is a little irrelevant. We are not writing a 30-page research paper right now. Using the wiki may be a taboo in a college paper, but it is NOT when you are using it informally in a forum such as this. Likewise, you wouldn't say the wiki is a bad source when you are quoting it inside of a mmo, would you? Of course not. Because you are not using the source in a formal fashion. Same for the citation signs, we are not writing a college paper right now (this made me laugh, no offense).

The current genre of harem is vague and too undefined.

But with this definition, you can list

Suzumiya Haruhi
Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu
To Aru Majutsu no Index
Evangelion
gundam series
Higurashi no Naku Koroni series

goes on and on etc...

So shouldn't there be a borderline as to how anime are defined?

By blindly naming animes with more than 2 girls, as harem genre, is alittle... weird Would you not agree?
As proven above, these are not harems because they are not romance-driven, at least according to my definition above; ie: their plots do not revolve around romance. I know for a fact that Haruhi, Gundam and Evangelion are not. I'm not sure about the rest because I've never seen or read them.

But if you do not have such conscience, then by all means feel free to just copy and paste all the 90% of anime out there.

I am no David or Galileo who can defeat the giant or change the world forever. So I cannot dispute with what has already been set forth semi in stone.

But I do wish to maintain a better image of how anime should be properly classified (at least for myself)

Which is why I was upset.

I really enjoyed Key Studio's works. I first started with Planetarian. A real touching Visual novel. Then I went on to all of its other works. They were all very good with the way they portrait miracles and how to touch you deep down inside where it hurts. Never a moment would you felt, OMG this is a Harem story. OMG so many girls going after the same guy.

None of that non-sense. It was meant to be, and only to be a pure love story.

But when it came to be anime, everything changed.

As I quote from how JP wiki on ハーレム系作品 had it:

"恋愛ゲームは、プレーヤーキャラクターである1人の主人公が多くの女性(男性)キャラと恋愛関係を持つた め、アニメ化されるとハーレムアニメになりやすい。原作では1対1の関係が主となるゲームであっても、アニ メ化の際に複数の分岐シナリオを1つのストーリーに再構築した結果、主人公が多数の女性(男性)と同時に関 係を持っている、あるいは、頻繁に相手を取り替えているといった印象を与えることがある。"

So I summarize it as : When most Romance Games with 1 main character and many characters of the opposite sex were translated into Animes, they often easily be classify as Harem animes. Even though, the original work only contain 1 to 1 plot, when present in the anime, the many scenarios were compressed into one and therefore, the main character seems to be dealing with many character of the opposite sex at the same time. Or at least give an image that the main character is doing such.

Therefore, with the transformation, all these pure love stories suddenly turned into "ZOMG Harem"

The only Harem genre in the eroge section are only those that have more than 1 heroines ending up with the main male character or vice versa.

Also just because the story is 1 to 1, does not mean the story is boring. Some of the best works are :

The Voices of a Distant Star
Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora - looking up at the half-moon

oh and i can't really comment on the Ichigo 100% I haven't watch, or read it yet.

------------------------------------------------

You guys do have the right to think whatever you like and I am not trying to change anything here. Nor that I can for the matter, but I just want to get this out here. So that I feel better. It is a rant section afterall XD

@Pedro and Novo, if you can find an ending to the Anime of Love Hina where Naru and Keitaro were together, and there goes the end. I'll give you a cookie XD. I know for a fact that the anime did not have that, like the manga had it.

(yes it is a real curve ball, and you made me do it :P)

and if someone came to be an ass about EF, they can use the "anyone's wikipedia" definition and say, its a harem series.

I guess i'll forever stick with the originals where only the truth exist.
The rest is just you explaining why you are upset, I think, so I won't comment on this part.

Lastly, let's say Negi ends up with Asuna, do you agree that Negima is a harem, or do you NOT agree? While there is an adventure and fighting theme, there is often a lot talk about love and dating, it is definitely a harem to me. It is different from Evangelion because nowhere along the story is there a part devoted solely to romance.

I'll stop here in this discussion in case you bring up something else and we stray off the topic even more. We will just be going around in a circle if that happens. When you start to feel that you are forgetting what you are originally arguing for, that's a bad sign.
