It actually isnt bonus points, more like a redistribution of your stats. This is put in place so players can finetune their characters to match their playing style. eg. A C rank unit who knows he will get kiled in 3 shots anyway might invest all his custom points into attack so they could hope to kill the enermie before they appear. However if the person wants to take more than 3 hits, he might pt 3 points in HP and sacrifice Speed if he wont be dashing.

I love this system cause it doesnt allow for overly haxed gundams and every stat is useful!
