I tried to do it that way, but it kept the motherboard too high for the output port things in the back to fit into the plate and the graphics card looked like it was about to fall over any second. I re-did it without the standoffs and everything was able to fit just fine. I was just worried that if I kept them on, the graphics card would just snap off since it looked like it was only being supported by the cartridge part being put into the PCI slot.
