Your pet has to be 3 stars or higher, and you have to be above lvl 30. As far as I know those are the only requirements.

It's not guaranteed to find an item. 10 food items = 10 chances. The chance base rate is based on the star level of your pet.
3 stars = 70% of finding an item
4 stars = 80%
5 stars = 90%
