Also do monsters deal bonus damage to you if they have a type advantage? It doesn't seem like it, but just double checking.
Mono-color teams are generally recommended because of the 4x bonus. A typical team with multicolors will yield much lower damage as there will be monsters that will not be affected by the 4x bonus.

Of course, this does not apply to special teams like Valkyrie 6.25x or Dragons 6.25x. However, such teams usually restrict themselves to 3 main colors max.

Dark 4x teams are the most popular because there is no resisting element against it, and all the core members can be obtained without the use of any cash. You can also get dark friends much easier (it's a pain playing light teams). There is also Hera's unique dungeon, making her the easiest dark God to acquire without any use of cash. Then there's also Keeper of Rainbow, a really solid dark monster with good bulk and damage without the need to level it up. The only problem is the difficulty in obtaining it early (congrats to Blizt and his 5 13 hours battle).

However, compared to fire team's Titan, Vampire is considerably harder to come by, so you need much more luck than Fire team. Also, you'll lack a leader unless you start with Loki/Vampire Lord (Loki is the better choice, but you'll need quite a bit of luck).

You may want to consider using early on in the game to help you tide past the lack of dark gems until you acquire Vampire Lord.

And no, there is no such thing as bonus damage from the opponents.
