I keep having this problem too. It's always my ISP. What I do is to install my client on a laptop (I play on a desktop), go to a coffee shop or anywhere with free wi-fi, update it there, then copy-paste the entire folder to my desktop.
With the number of Starbucks popping everywhere, you shouldn't have much problems finding a free wi-fi hotspot.
