for 1-80 the preferred way is wind with maybe a few dagger skills. its pretty much the fastest for leveling and is good for solo since youll have a shield. but with all the tons of exp crap there is speed isnt really an issue xD
for elements
fire is strictly one direction
wind also one direction
water has 3 skills in both directions, but only as a sorc/EM/minstrel
earth has two skills in both directions as both wizard/sorc/EM
based on what you said for solo play with AoE its prolly best to be a hybrid bard/minstrel. evil sound will be your main attack which has very good range in both directions. having the water skills will give you a bit more flexibility and variety than just ES spam and as i said they will have 3 skills in both directions
in reality if youre geared well enough any class is good for solo but bard might be the easiest once you get the hang of it
