Not sure, but maybe try turning down your graphics? I haven't played in a while so I don't remember the graphic options, but try experimenting with some of them (I think I turned down the background and the Virtual Sync). It might solve your problem.

Does it happen all the time or just when there are large amounts of monsters?

Not too sure what happened here... did you try reinstalling? Also, did you have any problems patching the game? It might do that sometimes if something was wrong with the patch.
