No idea on second one.
However, from what I hear, the less party members, the more EXP, but if you're going to be difficult to solo King's Road for EXP. Though, you do get party EXP for at least having one member, so I believe it's much better to have a duo than a party, it's just much easier and a higher chance of success when you have a full party.
Plus, quests later on ask you for a full party, which is just bullcrap.
